Cannabis Induces a Clinical Response in Patients with Crohn's Disease: a Prospective Placebo-Controlled Study.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23648372
"a short course (8 week) of THC-rich cannabis produced significant clinical, steroid-free benefits to 11 patients with active CD, compared to placebo, without side effects"

There's actually 2 other threads that discuss this study, and frankly, even if the study isn't definitive, I find it hard to believe that it is legal for doctors to prescribe opiates, but not cannabis.

Opiates carry a far greater risk of addiction, not to mention that it doesn't take very long for the body to build up a tolerance, requiring increasingly higher dosages to provide the same pain relief, eventually rendering them ineffective for pain, leaving the patient to suffer while struggling with addiction.

There are many indications that cannabis provides additional benefits other than just pain relief, including increased appetite for those suffering from "wasting" ailments.

Arguably, there may be some negative aspects to cannabis, but I don't see how they could possibly come anywhere even close to the negative effects of opiates.
