BIG vent about consultants in our local hospital ( hull, england )
I am going through my own personal battle to get a diagnosis and thought the bad treatment was personal ....i was wrong !!! :ywow:
I work ( when i am well ) as a hairdresser and talk a lot haha so i have made a few friends who are going through the same thing , one girl has just come back from seeing her consultant on friday , whilst doin her hair on saturday and asked her how she was getting on.
She told me she had her colonoscopy ( the only test she has had regarding her problems ) and saw the consultant for results He said they couldnt see all of the bowel due to her being in pain but the bit they saw (sigmoid )was fine so the rest of it will be too!!!!

he has diagnosed ibs, given her mebevrine and discharged her!!!! can you belive that they are willing to diagnose ibs by looking at one bit or bowel!!!

Then she told him she had been on a wheat free diet for a month which has helped a lot , gained 4 pounds and actually the bleeding has stopped and are you ready.........he told her not to do this because she will give heself an allergy and she should go back to eating normally ....duh she wasnt even able to eat then.

I just can't belive that consultants are not willing to be thourough before diagnosing ibs if they havent seen the ileum then how do they know its ok !!!

Isnt our health and best care what they are paid for and they of all people should know ibd is hard to diagnose !!! ggggrrrrrrrr vent over !!:ymad:

This is so frustrating, why do they not follow up. I think tests on the upper bowel are probably expensive and you have to be showing long term symptoms or near death before they will do anything other than a barium xray.
Question ; should they not do indepth testing while you are in there care.
Blood tests ; What tests are they doing ?
What do they think we do in between appointments ?

totally ive researched and theres somethinh in out nhs called rome I rome II to diagnose ibs and it does state that suspect of bowel disease , viral infection and allergies , intolerances should be eliminated before diagnosing ibs !!

personally i dont belive in ibs , i think its just and umbrella to put the symptoms under !! most ' ibs patients end up having one of the above, a bad and prolonged tummy bug, intolerances to foods , or ibd !!

xx fingers crossed for a diagnosis for you too

Sounds like the docs are trying to just throw the patient under the bus, forsure. I would look around for another doctor and see what he says. Some docs aren't to well with the issue. Good luck and keep us updated!

That is exactly what happened to me 4 years ago. 2 years after that I got worse (obviously the meds which had worked a bit weren't correct and they became ineffective) and I have that to thank for the state i am in today! And that was with abnormal blood tests and red flag symptoms. I didn't even get a full colonoscopy, just a crappy flexi-sig!

I ignored my instincts that something more was wrong and placed my trust in the Dr.

NEVER AGAIN

I may still be undiagnosed but I missed 2 years they could have been looking into it.... honestly think I never would have developed joint pain if things were looked into more throughly way back when.

i know what you both mean , its hard in england to change docs as they all stick to together and once they have given you the ibs diagnosis you gp cant refer you back unless you devlop a new symptom , its so silly !!! xx and may i add these people are paid lots of money to guess grrrr xx

As someone in a thread long ago once said - that's why it's called "practicing medicine" instead of "performing medicine". Some doctors seem to be MUCH better at practicing than others though.

Just ask your GP to refer you to a different hospital for a second opinion. Its easy to do, just a quick referral outlining what your symptoms are and what tests you have had. You can be seen at any hospital in the UK.
I sounds as if the gastro at Hull isn't being as thorough as he should and a second opinion would be a good plan.

really littlemiss i didnt know that i could go to a different hospital ? i dont suppose anyone knows of and good gastros in noth east of england lol xx i will tell my friend that too , thankyou x
