Hi All,

My granddaughter was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis, Candida and Intestinal Infection. At the age of 19 months she got very sick, she could not swallow her food without gagging and choking on it and after two doctors and a lot of pestering they discovered she had Candida (yeast infection of the esophagus). After they gave her one dose of medicine they turned around and said she was fine and sent her home. At this time she started with chronic diarrhea (watery) with undigested food and still could not swallow her food correctly. We took her to a third doctor in a different state and after reviewing her medical records he discovered the test results indeed said she had Candida. They treated her for Candida and she continued to get worse. At the age of 22 months old they did a Colonoscopy and Endoscopy and discovered she had Ulcerative Colitis, Candida and an Intestinal Infection. According to the doctors it is rare that a child her age would have Ulcerative Colitis. They started treatment again for Candida and gave her Sulfasalizine for Ulcerative Colitis which she took for a bit. She shortly got all the side effects that came along with the Sulfasalizine so they switched her to Pentasa. She took the medication from November 2009 until July 2010. With little to no change, she has some good days and some bad ones. In July 2010 the doctor decided that he wanted to take her off all medication so that he could run some more testing and see how things are going. Well she has been off the medication for about three weeks and things are not getting any better. The diarrhea is back full force, her food is not digesting again and she is always complaining of a belly ache. The doctor is planning on doing another colonoscopy and endoscopy the beginning of August 2010

Hi gypsi and :welcome:

Wow, that is so much for one so young to have to deal with. There are many people on here that had a diagnosis at a young age, even some that may have had it from a very young age.

You have found the right place for advice and support. There are many here that have suffered the same symptoms and been prescribed the same drugs and no doubt they will be along shortly to assist you.

Please keep us posted on how the little one is keeping. Is she managing to keep dehydration at bay with so much diarrhoea?

Take care,
Dusty

Hey Gypsi, when I think of my kids at that age, I can't imagine something so horrible as that. Is it your daughter's or son's child? Is there a family history of IBD on either side? All I can say is we'll be here for you lady. Please keep us posted on her progress and the results of the upcoming scopes.

Hi: thanks for all the warm welcomes. To answer a few of your questions that were asked, Yes she drinks a lot, she drink 5 32oz bottles of graduates strawberry kiwi water a day, and she is still always thristy. She will not drink anything else since she got sick.

Madasin is my daughters little girl, As for IBD running in the family, we have been told no one has been diagnosed. I myself have been sick since November with all the same things but of course I am much older and can handle it better then she can. I have had colonoscopy and endoscopy, along with small bowel follow through. They say all those test came back okay, However I do have high white blood cells in stool sample. So who knows exactly. i am not worried about myself I am only worried about her at this point.

Again thanks all for you welcomes and I look forward to reading and posting on the forum
