Last week I had an expedited appointment with my consultant prompted by severe mouth ulcers, continued bleeding and abdominal discomfort. As a result, I am going on to Azathioprine (125mg) & prednisolone (40mg). My blood work though showed a very low CRP (0.2) which I was expecting to be much higher. Does anyone else show symptoms but have a low CRP? How usual or unusual is that? Could it indicate that something else is going on? Crohn's was confirmed by colonoscopy earlier this year but despite that, every time I have an appointment, I still find myself worried that something else is at play.

CRP is a non specific marker of inflammation as you may already know.

Experiences on the forum are typical to yours; I even read once of someone having a normal CRP hours before emergency surgery was required! Others who have raging CD come back normal on inflammation tests. It doesn't seem to be a very good indicator in all cases.

You could ask for Compound Marker (blood tests) C3 and C4 which also measure inflammation.

I do hope that the meds help :) I was recommended a product called Gengigel on here for bad mouth ulcers, it really is good. You can use as much as you want as often as you want. I'd been doing double the recommended dose of Bonjela and needing more 5 minutes later!

My CRP has always been normal even through really bad flares. Do you get ESR included in your blood tests? That's another inflammatory marker, and for me that's the one which better reflects my Crohns inflammation, although like CRP it's non-specific. For some reason most gastroenterologists test CRP as standard and don't bother with ESR, I always have to remind mine that my CRP is always normal and it's my ESR that he needs to test.
