Hi, my name is Sarah Im 22 years old and have CD & UC, at the moment I am taking Imuran (Azathioprine) & Salazopyrin-en (Sulfaslazine) Was just wondering if anyone else has had really bad lower back pain?

Also I have constant pain down in my bowel for a week now, and is painful to go to the bathroom even to pee - is this normal?

Only got diagnosed with CD & UC over 2 months ago, have had the symptoms for over 5 years, but got real bad to actually make me get it checked out 2 months ago.

Any advice I can get would be great.

Thank you so much, Sarah xxx

I thought of kidney problems also. I would run these symptoms by your doctor.

HI Sara, welcome to the forum. I was prescribed Imuran/azathioprine. Started off on 50mg for 2 weeks, with weekly bloodwork. upped dosage to 100mg, within few days I broke out in a rash, and suffered excruciating pains in my back and legs. ended up in the ER. They suspected an allergic reaction to Imuran. My GI took me off of it, and within 2 days, the pains went away. 2 weeks later, as a follow-up to confirm that I'd had an allergic reaction, I was put on 25mg. Within hours, the pains returned in force. Again, coming off of it, the pains went away within days. You need to see your doc & get this checked out immediately. Often, a first exposure sensitizes one to an allergen, then a subsequent exposure results in an allergic reaction, and the trigger or threshold dosage/exposure often goes down. If this is what is happening to you, you could be playing with fire. My birth mother just spent a month in the hospital from an allergic reaction to Imuran. OK?

Have you ever had lower back pain before. I'm obviously not a doctor but it does sound like your kidneys. Does it hurt when you turn left or right. Does it hurt when you bend over. Have you gone to a chiropractor lately. Have you picked up anything unsually heavy.

It could be your kidneys but it could also be a fusion in your spine which a chiropractor could fix, it could also be a hernia.

Go to a doctor quick to see what it is.

Good luck

Hi Sarah, a couple of weeks ago I started with the painful peeing, so much so I was rushed to hospital. Diagnosis Kidney Stones brought on by dehydration thro' Crohns (being sick and 'D') The other symptom was severe pain in my lower left abdomen which went round to my back. Now that the Stone has calmed down a bit (still waiting for a scan to see where it is!) I have pain in the lower back, but mainly on the left side. I also had a Kidney infection which a short dose of antibiotics has cleared.

I've been on Azathioprine for the past three weeks now so I could not say whether the pain in my back is due to the drug or more probably the Kidney Stone.

Get it checked !!!

Hey MarkyB Kidney stones are no fun, been there, done that, got the tee shirt. Odd thing is that 'they' used to advise avoiding calcium after kidney stones (the old days). Now it's just the opposite... dehydration and low calcium levels/poor absorption now are seen as tandem contributors to the development of stonesSo, Snazzy, if you've a history of dehydration from fever, vomiting, diarhea, AND haven't been taking calcium supplements, then there is a definite risk of developing stones. And those can really be nasty, esp. when they start to move. You need to check this out immediately, OK?

Hi everyone :)

Thanks heaps for ur help. I rang my GI doctor yesterday to ask why I'm in this pain and he checked my blood test results, but turns out the ppl at the Pathology have been doing the incorrect tests on my blood for my Imuran IDIOTS ! So have to go get some more done today and fingers crossed they check it correctly this time!! He also said this Back Pain is just to do with having Crohn's, but the pain has moved to my left leg now - if it continues like this I will demand to get checked out. This medication scares me and I know its no joke when it comes to health.

Thank u Sarah :)
