lowered white cell count.

Well, everything was going good and in right direction, my sons med (6mp) was now at the therapeutic level (1.25ml at bedtime) and has been for few weeks now but today his nurse has rang to say his white cell count has fallen and is now "borderline". his nurse comes tomorrow to do extra bloods to see how his level is now, his last bloods were 2 weeks ago so hopefully the level hasnt fallen again. What normally happens when the cell count lowers? do they lower his 6mp to a smaller dose? he has been on this med for a year come december , at the very beginning they put him straight onto the therapeutic level but it wasnt right, his nurse had said it was probably too quick for that amount so we started off a smaller dose then worked our way up to 1.25ml. Just when u think its all goin good, something happens. will this just be with the immunosuppresant drug that his white cell count has lowered and just needs adjusted again, so many things going round in my mind now. xx

Hey dodie,

Assuming he has otherwise been well then based on what you have said it would hard not to think it was the 6mp, particularly when he has only been at that dose for a few weeks. Normally they would reduce the dose and see if they can bring things back into line.

Of course there is always the possibility that it was just a one off too.

I hope things settle without too much disruption hun, everything well and truly crossed!

Good luck with the tests tomorrow and keep us posted...

Thinking of you,

well, kians ibd nurse rang this morning and his white cell count is back up, must have been a one off as you mentioned DustyKat. just waiting on another test that they had asked for which is to see if his body is absorbing the 6mp ok. fingers x. xxx

Is that the TPMT test?

I certainly will have everything crossed that the test is fine!...:goodluck:

Hmmmm i dont know, the nurse said this test normally takes around 2 weeks to come back with results?

Hello dodie74,

I'm glad your son's white cells are back up, it is very hard when you are coasting along nicely to have something like that thrown at you. But pleased it is now looking good.

Take care,
Lily Rose

Hey dodie,

Just wondering if any symptoms came with that low white blood cell count? My son is very tired, although he has picked up a bit of a cold. I am not sure if it is a side effect from 6mp or white blood cell count. We have labs drawn tomorrow. Best of luck to you on continued success, hope that count stays up for you!!

hi johnnysmom, no Kian didnt have any symtoms when his cell count was low, thank goodness it went back up again. how long has your little one been on 6mp and is it working? xx

Dodie, Johnny just started 6mp last week and he started Prednisone 2 weeks now and he is doing very well. My G.I. said it takes a few months for the 6mp to work and by then he should be off the Prednisone. He just had labs done on Friday and I am assuming that is how they will track if it is working?

yes kian has been om 6mp for nearly a year now and at first his bloods were done weekly then fortnightly and now we are monthly ( if his bloods are ok again that is). its taken a year to get to the therapeutic level, he takes 1.3ml of 6mp right before bedtime and he is fine, touch wood. i hope the 6mp works for your boy too. xx
