Magnesium Supplementation

Hello, I've been making research about how to increase magnesium in my body. I have serious magnesium deficiency. Increasing magnesium via high magnesium containing foods is very hard. Especially with active crohn's disease. I decided to take magnesium citrate tablets as a supplement. I know it can cause diarrhea and I never tried it before. Magnesium oil isn't available in my country. If you have any experience with magnesium citrate as a supplement, would you tell me, did you get diarrhea after using it? I'm going to start with 200 mg/day to be safe.

Opioids make my bleeding worse. I'm suspecting my daily severe migraines are causing from severe magnesium deficiency. I get leg cramps too. For me, it is impossible to get good level of magnesium from food sources. All mg rich foods are no-no for my gut. Supplementing it can also make diarrhea worse. Hard situation.

Thanks. I tried 200 mg and it didn't give trouble. I'll split the dose like 100mg morning 100mg evening.

Be careful you Don't take the magnesium at the same time as a vit d or calcium supplement as they will block the absorption.

Matt takes Magnesium Citrate twice daily and it has never altered his bowel habits. :)

DustyKat , may I ask how much daily magnesium do your son take? Also I can't be sure how long should supplementing last. Forever? There is no proper testing for magnesium levels and dietary intake of magnesium is very poor; even with healty absorption.

In my opinion, there is no more important mineral than Magnesium for good health. I would take it regardless, Crohns or not. It would be difficult to overdo Magnesium. I take 150 percent of the dv now and I would not hesitate to take double that amount. Who knows how much is actually absorbed?

Dan

Dan, thanks for your opinion. I assume you are taking 600mg. Do you split your dose?

That's interesting. I was told to take my magnesium and Vit D3 at the same time to help absorption of both. Calcium was to be taken at a different time.

Ah it must be the calcium! I wasn't sure which one it was because I take a combined vitd and calcium and just knew one of them blocked it!!

I am so sorry for the late reply Crohn2357. :(

He takes one capsule twice daily of the following formulation:

700mg per capsule (498mg Curcuminoids) ~
1 Capsule per serving ~
100 servings ~
525mg Curcuma longa Extract (95% Curcuminoids), 175mg Piper nigrum ~
(3:1 Curcumin/Pepper Ratio) ~

I have dosed according to serum blood levels and imagine it will be something that will be supplemented long term.

Dusty. :)

DustyKat, I guess you copied wrong formulation. This isn't magnesium.

Yikes! Sorry! It’s the Turmeric he takes.

This is the Magnesium:

Magnesium Citrate 61.8mg
Magnesium Chelate 23.4mg
Magnesium Aspartate 7.1mg
Magnesium Orotate 6.56mg
Total Elemental Magnesium 98.86mg

I know blood values are pretty useless but at least I can track trends if nothing else. :)

As I mentioned early on in this thread, I was told to take magnesium and Vit D together to help with the absorption of both but to to take calcium at a different time.
