Reading through posts I notice there is quite a variation as to when and what medication is prescribed, if any, following a resection for CD.

Sarah:
wasn't diagnosed until she was operated on so she didn't actually see a GI until 3 months post op. However her GP did contact the guy that was to become her GI at about 2 weeks post op and she was commenced on Imuran 50mg daily. She remains on that same dose 5 years later.

Matt:
was already on Imuran 50mg daily and this was increased to 100mg daily post operatively. He is also on a 3 month course of Flagyl as the GI Prof stated that research suggests this will increase his chances of maintaining remission over a longer period of time.

What are your experiences?

Just an added snippet and my opinion...
If you have a surgeon and a GI with two differing opinions as to how your Crohns should be managed in the long term, go with the GI.

lol, yes, listen to the GI not the surgeon. :p

For me: Continued weaning off of Prednisone. Was on a really high dose and they started weaning me off before the surgery since they knew they were going that route. Kept me on 6MP (went from 75mg before surgery to 50mg after surgery) and Asacol (dose stayed the same after surgery 2,000mg/day) for 10 years. I was taken off of Asacol about 2 years ago and have only been taking 50mg of 6MP ever since. I recently started getting B12 injections since I seem to have a hard time absorbing B12 and I'm usually on the low end but not quite deficient.

I was taken off everything straight after the surgery and my GI discharged me, so all being well I hope that is the right choice, the GI that was oncall in hospital after the surgery said if I was his patient he would have def put me on a maintainence drug but I wasn't his patient so that was that... I saw my surgeon last week who took all my bloods and said I might need Vit B12 injections i'm due to see him in the next couple of weeks so willl find out then, so far so good though I had the surgery in Nov and I still feel fine.

I had my pre-surgery appt. today. The plan is to take steroids right up until the morning of the surgery, and then they will wean me off of the in the hospital.
