Hi All,

just wondering if anyone uses medical marijuana in conjunction with imuran? I am in Australia and currently self medicate with Mary jane (its not legal here) but i find it the most effective treatment I have used. (been on pred now for 4 months) (was only Dxd with suspected CC in Sept 2012). Anyway, I'm just wanting to know if anybody has been on Imuran and still used cannabis?

Hi Joshuaaa,

I've been on Imuran (Azathioprine) for around 12/13 years, and for the last 5ish, I had used cannabis. It really helped with the niggly gut problems, and seemed to stop the stress related flares. The only problem with me was that when I was forced to stop MJ, I always seemed to flare. As for using Imuran and MJ together, it never seemed to cause me any issues.

Hi Joshuaaa. I never took Imuran but I did take 6MP which is very similar. Only thing I can share is that I never had any issues combining the two. Was there a more specific question you wanted answered or were you just wondering if it was ok to use both at the same time or simply looking for others experiences?

Hey guys thanks for the responses, would you say you had fairly successful remission on the azathioprine? I find Mmj to be amazing for settling the gut but at same time I'd like to get in 100% remission, hence maybe it's time to start azathioprine coz I can't be on pred forever, already been on It 4 months straight,

If you could share your experiences with azathioprine I'd really appreciate it, I'm Tryna do the whole diet thing as well.

Joshua, I've been on Imuran for the past 12.5 yrs and have been smoking mmj every day for the past 4 yrs. There hasn't been any interaction at all for me and that says a lot since I usually experience all the extremely rare side effects. I originally started smoking when I started showing signs of mild inflammation even though I was on the Imuran. After a few months, I was back to normal.

MMJ is a mild anti-inflammatory which gives a bit of aid when taken in conjunction with Imuran. I know for a fact that it maintains my remission as when I began skipping doses (like an idiot) I flared up enormously.

So while I can't say whether or not Imuran would put you into 100% remission, I do know that it's quite an effective treatment in maintaining remission but not enough without mmj and diet.

Hello Joshua,
I would like to share my experience with combining Cannabis ( I cant say is it medical marijuana because i am not sure what medical marijuana is, and I have no idea what strain of cannabis I am using ) and Imuran. I have Crohns diagnosis for like 7 years. Last lets say 5 years I use Imuran, currently 200mg per day. Also, I would like to add that my Crohns is not harsh as it can be. My problems are mostly abdominal pains and diarrhea and they would occur lets say in 2,3 days per week. But, when I started smoking cannabis, my diarrhea softened to lets say 2,3 days per 2 weeks. And I dont smoke lot at all, 1 gram in 2 weeks or so. So, based on mine experience, go ahead with cannabis, it helps and work well with Imuran. And yeah, lately I am taking Imuran pills once in 3 days, and I dont have flare ups at all.

Best regards from Serbia.

I think that's the trick, combining a few things and tweaking them to get you to that level of remission you're after.

By combining a few things, I mean taking a Pharm med, maybe using MM and adjusting your diet. Those three things in conjunction may help you more than just relying on one option.

Even though we all have the same disease, it hits us differently and different meds/diets/etc. affect us differently.

I take 100mg Aza and smoke a little bit every day, like 5-10 hits ...have been for many months and no issue and no issue on the blood tests. I'm only at like 70% remission so I may need to up the Aza more.
