Entocort EC/6-MP/Mesalazine Cocktail?

Hey everybody,

I am 24 years old and have had ongoing IBS for years. Over the past 2 months, I developed a persistent lower right quadrant pain that would not go away. I went to my doctor and he referred me to a GI. My GI did a series of tests, including a colonoscopy whereupon he made a clinical diagnosis of Crohn's. There is still some outstanding blood work.

In any case, at the time, he prescribed me with Entocort EC. This did not ease the inflammation and this week I woke up one morning with a fever and pain which concerned me. The next day I went in to see my GI, and consulted with his backup physician as he was out of the office. After examining me and listening to my state he decided that after a month of being on Entocort EC it was time to step up the treatment. So, he prescribed me at 100mg of 6-Mercaptopurine, and also with Mesalazine (Pentasa). This is at a dosage of 1000mg four times a day. He stated that I should have 2 full round blood tests in two weeks and four weeks.

My concern is this, I was reading some details about 6-MP and I came across one precaution that states:

Certain medications are contraindicated when taking mercaptopurine. Medications used to treat ulcerative colitis (olsalazine, mesalamine, sulfasalazine) interfere with how mercaptopurine works and may increase the toxicities experienced. If you are being treated for ulcerative colitis discuss this risk with your doctor.

I am curious if anyone else has been on this concoction of drugs. I took my first set of pills for 6-MP and Pentasa this morning.

Please let me know, as I am new to all of this and like my nick says... Too young to need a pill organizer already. ;-)

Hey,

I don't know if this helps at all but next week i am also going on 6-mp and i know my GI is keeping me on Pentasa as well. Hopefully this give you some relief. Also, I noticed that you said you aren't get a blood test for two weeks ... I think that generally you are suppose to get blood work every week for the first month on 6-mp and then during the second month you go every two weeks.
