Methotrexate and Acne Meds

My 18-yr old son has struggled with bad acne this last year during a Crohn's flare. He was on Bactrim and Tretinoin topical and doing much better, then had to take 3 weeks of Prednisone. The cystic acne is mostly gone, but some other sort of pimples have now dominated his face, back and chest.

We are to start methotrexate weekly injections next week. There is possibility for serious drug interactions with the acne meds he is on, so the dermatologist has advised to tough it out for now and hold off on any more antibiotics.

School starts in a few weeks and we'll need to get senior pictures taken in the fall. He is a trooper, but I know this bothers him and I'd like to help him if we can.

Any ideas? What have you tried?

I have always had some acne although much worse at your sons age which is probably hormonal. I have found that Hibiclens helps to kill the acne pretty well. Just be very careful not to get it in the eyes, nose or mouth.

I had the 2nd worst acne in high school. I understand his pain.

I would look for tinted moisturizer - a boy might not feel like it is "makeup" if it is a tinted moisturizer. Clinique makes a great one. It goes on like lotion and makes everything on the face look much less severe.

Maybe he'd let you put some concealer on for picture day?

W are struggling with this too. The dermatologist wanted my son on a three month course of antibiotics but the GI warned it could cause a flare. We had some success with Zyneryt liquid for three months before he started reacting to it on his back. We still use it on the face

My daughter was on Bactrim while on Methotrexate (mtx). She didn't have any issues. I didn't know there could be. She has switched now & is off Mtx. good to know there is a potential for issue.

Supportive Mom-it was the pharmacy that caught it. The insurance company wouldn't let them fill it until he was off the Bactrim for 50 hours. I am fearing the methotrexate anyway. This is not helping, especially since the GI office said it was fine.

Yay for pharmacists! My son was on prednisone last yr and got a good crop of pimples on his forehand from the medication-and he was only 8! They did clear up on their own after stopping the Pred, but it took a couple months. If it's still an issue on your son's picture day, I think photographers will usually retouch portraits.

The mtx was pretty easy on my kid. It just didn't do anything for her. The needles are easy to get used to and she had no side effects. She has had a harder time with Imuran but it is what is working better than all else. Crohnskidmom brought up a good point I forgot. My daughter's middle school graduation photos were at the height of acne breakout and we just paid the $10 for touchup. It was worth it
