I picked up prescription today for my son to start methotrexate injections tomorrow evening. After reading pamphlet that comes with it, I am very scared. He has a cough right now (no fever) and I see there is a potential for lung issues. I've asked the doctor's office and they said it's fine as long as he has no fever. I'm still really scared and questioning my decision---our other option was Remicade. I just feel so helpless as there doesn't seem to be any perfect treatment and I hate to pump these chemicals into his little body. Also, he feels fine so I am petrified that these drugs may make him not feel good. Can someone talk me through this?

My son has been on both oral mtx and injections as well remicade and now humira.

He has allergies so does have coughing and such when he doesn't take his meds (allergy meds) and has taken all these meds with no problem.

As long as there is no fever and the doc agrees then it should be fine.

My older daughter is on MTX injections and has been on them for years. She's never had any issues with her lungs. I agree, as long as the doctor says it's ok to give it to him, it's ok. The lung side effect is quite rare, I believe.

My daughter had some nausea with MTX but taking it at night, using Zofran and upping her folic acid helped. Now she has mild nausea and doesn't even always need the Zofran.

MTX has worked very well for her!

Good luck!!

Is that her only form of medication?

No, she is also on Humira. But we know the MTX really works because she has tried to stop it/reduce the dose two separate times and both times she flared.

Good luck!

Did your child have any side effects from the methotrexate?

No, my son hasn't had side effects from mtx in either oral or injection form. He's been on several different dose amounts. He also takes folic acid daily, 1mg, since mtx is an folate antagonist

Yes to all of the above
My son is on MTX along with the Humira
We do his shot late afternoon & he usually feels fine with no nausea
We also use a diabetic syringe so the needle is very thin & it really doesn't hurt at all
Best of luck to your son!

My son has been on remicade for over a year. We just added in the methotrexate injections about a month ago. We give it to him Friday after dinner time, and so far no adverse reactions. I too hate hate hate administering this injection so I usually make husband do it! I just hate all these medication going into my child but I don't see any other way...I just pray he gets healthy and stays healthy.

Completed first injection half an hour ago---it was a total breeze for him! So far (knock on wood!) he feels fine. Praying he wakes up tomorrow morning feeling the same way! Thanks for all the support and feedback!
