Methotrexate

So, we may be changing from 6mp to methotrexate for Kian. Mri scan 1st and then scopes to see whats going on in there. Calprotectin level very high and his weigh hasn't gone up at all, although he has grown in height. His nurse mentioned he had inflammation last time at the join between the large and small intestine and looking at his symptoms it could be there where the inflammation is? will know more after the scopes. He is absorbing the 6mp ok but maybe its just not doing the job anymore. So does methotrexate target different areas then, still learning about this horrible condition!! If he gets started on it, it will be weekly shots. x

C doesnt have experience with the MTX injections, he is on the oral dose. Both MTX and 6MP are immunosuppressant but 6MP and Imuran are thioprines and MTX is not. MTX doesn't target certain areas that I'm aware probably the GIs are trying to find the one that is going to work best for him since 6MP doesn't seem to be getting the whole job done.

MTX works the same as 6-mp- it is a systemic ( whole body) drug. So for some it does well others its not enough.. 6-mp worked better for Ds than MTX ( injections)..both drugs were not enough though.

The mtx medicine doesn't burn. They aren't sore afterwards. The needle is little. We don't even use numb cream (emla) for them. (We do for the cimzia)

My son has weekly MTX injections, after he proved intolerant of Imuran. It is working well for him. I got a crash course in injections from the GI nurse, and it didn't take long to get the hang of it. My son is not thrilled with the shots, but like previously mentioned, the needle is short and the medication does not burn when being injected. No soreness or redness post-injection either. It can cause nausea and fatigue in some people. Get a heavy duty anti-nausea med, just in case. Folic acid helps too. So far, so good for my son. I hope you have a good experience with it also.
