Hi everyone,

I'll keep it quick....
I had a permanent ileostomy 16 months ago. For the last 8 moths I have started running, to try and compete in some races :) Done 5 10ks so far.
The problem I have is, after a big (ish) run (10k/6miles) although I feel fine when I'm running - most of the time. It's afterwards that I get a splitting headache, which gradually progresses into a migraine which I have to sleep to escape it!
Some time when I am running my energy levels are terrible, and other times I am fine! But more often than not its the feeling terrible after the race that is the worst thing. I have pretty certainly linked the worse of it to the weather - when it's hot it's worse.
My first instinct was hydration (with the ile and all!) but I've tried my best to drink PLENTY before, during and after the race. The drinks I have are always ISO tonic or electrolyte replacements, and although they seem to work during, I still feel poop after.

So my question is to other ostomates; exactly how much do you drink when exercising? And what do you drink?
I feel like I have pretty much tried everything, and I'm at a loss now.
Plus I have the great north run coming up and I'm terrified that it's going to make my head explode!

Thanks in advance :)

Have you consulted your doctor?

Headaches following exercise can sometimes be a sign of serious underlying illness/disorders.

I suggest you check in with your regular general practitioner just to cover all your bases.

And for a hydration drink you might try Hydralyte or something like it. The electrolyte balance is better than in stuff like Gatorade.

Vicky I'm thinking hydration as well. But also, is it possible you have a trapped nerve or a disk out of place?

After 3 years with the ileostomy, I finally understand that I need much, much more fluid than I ever thought. Also, I actually need snacks. I can't go into a 90 moderate yoga class without having had a small snack and with a bottle of water near the mat. If intake a walk more tha a half hour, I carry water and am sure to drink it. I agree with checking electrolyte levels and suggest having doc take a peak at albumin in blood and how much you are peeung out. How are your kidney and liver panels?

I do not have Crohn's (my son does) but I am a runner and I do suffer from migraine headaches after long runs sometimes so the title of this thread caught my eye. I find hydration and electrolytes do play a role but one of the biggest factors for me is sun in my eyes. I find that if I run for an extended period of time with the sun in my eyes it seems to set off a migraine. I get visual auras with my migraines and it is almost as if the sun in my eyes mimics the aura and then eventually sets it off. I don't like running with sunglasses on so I use a visor and if I can I change the direction of my run so the sun is not in my eyes.

Hope you can get it sorted out. A migraine is a rotten reward for a run.
