Son has a little mouth ulcer on the gum and its bothering him when he eats. I have difflam spray (benzydamine hydrochloride) in the cupboard and wondered if it was ok to use on him as he on mxt?

I know it is contraindicated with some anti-inflammatories but I am not sure if Difflam falls under the type of anti-inflammatory they are talking about.

I did find this however and since it is published by the NHS it should be accurate enough:

Mouth ulcers/stomatitis - STOP methotrexate if severe and seek advice. Consider Difflam® mouthwash. Reduce dose if mild/moderate. Check folate levels.

I would check with the pharmacist as well.

My daughter had mouth ulcers on methotrexate and we weren't told to stop it. Instead, her folic acid dose was increased. Does your son take folic acid?

:eek2: Same thing, never told to stop if canker sores are severe. We also were never told to increase folic acid either.:eek2:

Out of curiosity, does anyone know the American equivalent of difflam spray?
Or is that what it's called in the USA?

I swear by magic mouth wash (prescription strength). Grace gets open ulcers that can take up the inside of her cheek. Magic mouth wash works every time.

yes he takes 5mg a week of folic acid. its only the one ulcer down at the bottom of the lip/gum. Hope no more appear. xx
