My husband got a job in Newport, RI and we are moving there the end of July!! Very excited!! My American kids have never lived in the States and neither have I!! I need help with finding a good doctor and a place for my daughter to get Remicade. Where do I start? Do you just "go" to the hospital and ask for Remicade :)? Anyone from there?? I would appreciate any advice!!

Hello Aniuko
Congratulations on the move.
There is a doctor directory in the title above these messages.
Take a look there for a start.
There may be other forum members in Rhode Island that can help if they see your post.
You could also ask your current GI if he/she could recommend someone.
Other than that be sure to bring all the information about your child, ie diagnosis when and where and by whom, all tests and all medications with the names of doctors and specialist.
Safe travelling and happy moving.
Hugs and best wishes

When you locate the list, there are 22 GI docs in Rhode Island---- and each underline when you click on it will give you a rating by a forum member.
The more gold stars the better .

How exciting. I often wonder what it would bee like to move to another country.
But then I realize that you have city folks everywhere now a days.
Road island is beautiful I hear.
I'm not sure who we have over there..... crohnsinct, Maya142 live in that part of the country bit not in RI.

I would make the new doctors appointments before coming because it could take a few months to get into see them.

Is your daughter under 18 or over 18?
Under 18 goes to a pediatric Gi - they typically are associated with a children's hospital .
I am tagging crohnsinct .
Remicade needs to be prescribed by a GI in the states and must be approved by insurance first .

List of top pediatric hospitals
You would need to call now to set up record review - tranfer of records so she doesn't miss out on remicade infusions .
If you have a copay on remicade remistart is a good program to sign up for .
Again I would call now .

Depending on where in Rhode Island - Boston maybe better or Conneticut .
Also look into 504 plans those will be needed for school.

Good luck ask lots of questions

How exciting for you all, plus more than a few nerves no doubt! :ghug:

I know nothing of Rhode Island except I assume that is where the so named chooks originated from?

Seriously though, I hope all goes smoothly and your travels are safe ones.

Good luck!

We're in NY but I would imagine there's a children's hospital in Rhode Island? Or Boston Children's Hospital is supposed to be great but that's probably about an hour away or so (they have satellite locations all over MA so there might be one close to you).

If you find a pediatrician, sometimes they can get you in to GIs more quickly, our GI had a 2 month wait and our pediatrician got in us in 2 weeks. You would need a GI to prescribe Remicade for your daughter.

Sorry, I'm not much help, I'm going to tag mylittlepenguin because she knows everything.

Hi Aniuko,
My little penguin gave you good info. Is your husband active military? If so, I might be able to help. Let me know if I can help?

Welcome to the US.

Funny thing is my family could be possibly be moving to Germany this summer.

Wow big changes! I don't know anything about Newport, RI except that is where my dad is from but I've never been there. Good luck I would agree about getting a pediatrician and referral to Ped GI

Thanks everyone for all your help!! There is SOOOO much work before we go...not stressing at all :)!! It is 10.30 in the morning and I feel like I need a glass of wine to relax :)!

I will check the list, that's a grew idea. Thanks!

So, for the next Remicade I would need to go first to the paediatrician and then to the GI? Did I understand it correctly? I know I may sound completely stupid but I only know the German health care. Can I call, let's say Boston Chilren's Hospital and make an app with their GI? And then have Remicades there? Where is Remiacde administered in the US? Only in the hospitals? I would love to have the best care for Kasia (of course, like all of you) and I don't mind driving an hour to Boston, but does it make sense? In Germany it does :)! we drive 1,5 hour to Munich. Emily's mom - no, husband is a civilian and we have Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance (I have no idea if this information is relevant or not :)!) And...if you move to Germany, let me know! I will help you! my little penguin - Thanks for great info!! Kasia is turning 14 this summer so she is still technically a child. I think our insurance company (BCBS) will pay for it as they have been paying for everything here..but that's something I need to check. What's 504 plans? We think we are moving to East Greenwich so I guess Boston is closer???? Her next remicade will be the end of August and I will have all the docs this Friday or a few days later. Wow! I didn't know you have to do these things so far in advance. We are really spoiled here in Germany!!

Ok...lots of thinking and lots to do...I better get to work. I will appreciate all advice and will ask lots of stupid question. I am sorry if I sound ignorant...:)

Thanks a lot, everyone!!

504 is a school accommodation plan and provides things like extra time for tests, free anytime bathroom usage. Jack's specifically states any time missed because of disease activity or doctors/hospital visits does not count towards his 90% attendance policy, He has stop the clock testing for timed tests if he needs to use the restroom or just longer time period to take the test. He has additional time to make up missed work. Teachers at their discretion can waive assignments for example in math after missed time he only needed to do enough problems to show understanding and not the whole worksheet or page. He is allowed to have snacks in class.
If you get to keep your Blue Cross Blue Shield that should hopefully make the switch easier. Most Pediatric specialties require a referral from a pediatrician but since she has already been diagnosed it may not be the case but sometimes it is easier to get an appointment or get the GI you want that way. You also want to make sure that wherever/whomever you see accepts your insurance. They also may have preferred providers that they want you to see.
Wouldn't hurt to make a few phone calls even to the insurance company and work on getting their end of it set up.

Good luck with the move!! Very exciting! :D

You can also try www.ratemds.com as a starting point in searching for a doctor. Just enter all the relevent data (city, doctor's specialty, etc.). Like any other site, can't vouch for the recommendations??? but, it is a good site to start searching.

Wow, Jmrogers...this program is great! I have never heard of anything like this. So far, Kasia never needed anything like this, but our school was very special (100 kids, K-8 and everybody knew everyone) and I bet the situation will be different in RI. thanks a lot. What do I do to enroll in this program?

Thanks, everyone...you guys are so helpful!

The school will have a 504 coordinator, here it is the counselor or the social worker. Crohn's falls under the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) and reasonable accommodations must be provided. So when you register her for school tell them she has Crohn's and you need to have a 504 put into place. It is really helpful in high school where you have numerous teachers and classrooms throughout the day. It will also help if it's already in place for college should she decide to attend in the US.
The CCFA has a basic template you can use.

Hey there and welcome to the states! I live in Connecticut, so very close to Rhode Island. My daughter is seen at Connecticut Children's Medical Center. Her doc was recruiter from Boston Children's to start up the IBD center here. Her infusions are done in his office at the hospital.

CCMC is about and hour and a half from Newport and Boston is an hour and fifteen. CCMC is a smaller center than Boston but we absolutely love it. They also have satellite offices for routine visits all over CT and one or two in Massachusetts. Either way you go I don't think you would be disappointed. Boston consistently tops the list of best ped GI hospitals.

It is pretty common here for us all to drive an hour plus to a good children's hospital and doc.

Good luck with the move!

Congrats on the move! Sorry, I have no advice, but I have been to Rhode Is and it is beautiful (mind you, so is Germany...). Have a safe move!

Congratulations on your move, and a big move at that! I moved from Scotland to
England and thought that was a big move, nothing like you are doing though :) It's always daunting moving away from what you know. I know we had the same problems in our move, in finding a school and a new hospital. All I can say is do lots of research into both.
I went to Garmisch many years ago and thought it a beautiful place, I can imagine you will be sad to leave there. But I am sure that Rhode Island will be a good move for you all. Good luck x
