I am not sure if this is the correct place to post. I don’t have any success stories or happy wonderful outcomes that will make everyone smile. I’ll tell my story anyway.
I was diagnosed in my late 20 with Cohn’s. I took 3 Sulfasalizine for many years and had no problems with my Crohn’s. Then when I was 55 I went into the hospital as I was blocked. I got better and have had a few flares since which only lasted a week to 10 days. I take 3 Entocort and 16 Pentasa for a month and I am was remission.
However, around March of 2011 I started a flare and have been taking the Entocort and Pentasa for almost 5 months. I see my G.I. on 8/3/2011 and will discuss next steps since my current therapy is not getting me into remission.
He is talking about a steroid treatment or Remicade. For the first 30 years I did not give Crohn’s much respect as it did not affect my life much. Now that I am in my early 60s it is getting my attention. I am very happy the first 30 years of my Crohn’s was so mild. I hope I can get into remission ASAP. I am not sure if age has exacerbated my condition or what has happened.

Thanks for sharing your story. Sounds like you are trying to find your balance again. Maybe the telling words in your story are "did not give Crohn's much respect". With THAT change, and patience with the tedious challenge of finding what will work to get you a back into remission --my vote is you will succeed ! In reading around this forum, I'm finding a lot of helpful information and a reminder that I have a lot to be thankful for --many have a much worse time of it than I. Good Luck! PC

Hi Ron and welcome! That is wonderful news that your Crohn's was so mild for 30 years, but I am sorry it is now acting up. I am not sure whether your age has to do with it; this disease is just so unpredictable. However, I do suggest sticking with a treatment plan even if after you achieve remission. By staying on a maintenance drug, you will help reduce the risk of future flare ups.

You may want to check out the Remicade sub-forum to learn about this treatment. I hope you start feeling better.

Hi Ron. I'm sorry that you are flaring now, but glad you had 30 years without much trouble from your Crohn's. I hope you can find the right combination of whatever treatment to get back in remission and stay there.

HI Ron , welcome to the forum .I have had crohn's for 21 years now and was! in remission for 15 years and it just out of the blue flared up. i am now on preds and i hope it will go back in remission so i can eat! i am now on fluids only and that sucks big time. i hope yours clear up soon and get back to your normal self again. best wishes

Thanks to all who replied to my post. It sure seems like Mr. Crohn’s travels an individual path with most of us. Their some commonalities of course but it seems most of our experiences are as unique as our lives. I am hoping to be in remission soon and then stay there.

Ron

Please tell me since this is all new for me, what does a flare up feel like, is it the same labour like pains I had before my surgery? I was diagnosed after the bowel resection was done, I have no pain now, could I still be flaring up and not know untill its really bad? I'm on anti-biotics right now. it might be masking my flare up, I don't know. Please tell me how you lead up to a flare up, I'm scared. I'm 40 and was never sick before this year, this is all new and terrifying. If I eat cheese and get no pain is it going to build up and hurt me later? I hate eating tasteless and mushy food, but I guess I have no choice. You are on only liquid? Is this what I'm going to be on after the 3 months are over and I'm not on anti-biotics?

a flare up is pain and cramping in you intestines or your belly. if you can eat solid foods and don't hurt you, your doing fine. the antibotics should clear up you inflammation. Are you on predisone or other meds to help with the inflammation? i put my self on fluids myself because i couldn't eat anything or i viomt or had bad stomach pain in my right hand side. i introduced solid food again to my diet and things seem fine i am my third week of preds and meds. but, don't worry if you doing well with solid foods and after the antibotics. just try smaller meals and space them out accordingly throught out your day. and plenty of fresh water. if you have any other questions please fell free to ask i will respond. best wishes.

Your GI Doctor could probably answer these questions better than I. I believe each person has a unique path when it comes to Crohn's. I know when I am having a flare and there is no doubt about it. I met with my GI doctor yesterday and I am starting Remicade infusions. Best of luck to you. Ron

Thank you Scott, I'm sorry that you're still having trouble, I hope it gives you a break. Wow, you're on the other coast. No I'm not taking anything else but Metronidazole (anti-biotics) Jamieson probiotics and Flinstone Vitamins. (I can't take most vitamin pills, my body rejects them but childrens vitamins are okay, weird huh)

Ron, I hope the same for you, that it stops flaring, oh you guys are among the few in the world that know what labour pain feels like, since I've experienced both, I know the pains are the same.

rfischer48, thank you, I am going to see a GI soon, I won't see the first one I went to because he almost killed me but his colleage was there for me in the hospital so I've asked for a referral to see him. I hope I get to see a dietition too, its too bad that there is no one miracle diet that we could all use and Voila. oh well :)

Welcome :)

Hopefully your doctor can quickly put you in remission so you can go another 30 years with crohns not being active.
