Hello everyone.

Really pleased to have found such an informative forum. I am a 22 year old recent graduate from Reading University, England.

My story starts away back when I was 13 years old. Around Summer time in 2002, from no-where, I developed Chronic diarrhea. At first I thought this was just a stomach bug, however, it went on for several weeks. I went to the Dr and he put me on imodium. The symptoms didn't get better. I went back to him and he got in touch with a bowel specialist in the hospital. A few days later I had a Colonoscopy - they knocked me out for this as I was so worried about it. Anyway after the biopsy results came through I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease.

Straight away I was referred to a Gastroenterologist and he put me on mesalazine which I have been on to date. This seemed to settle things along with the Azathioprine that I went on later. The years went on and I got my grades at School and then went to university in Edinburgh. However, I lasted only one year there as I developed a perianal abscess which had to be operated on. This left me with a drain coming out my rear which wasn't very comfortable but it did it's job. I then decided to start a fresh at Reading for a 3 year Meteorology course. I got through 1st year but then at the start of 2nd year I developed another abscess in the same area. Again I went home and got it drained, albeit, not successfully this time. I was in again a few weeks later as it re-infected. So I missed quite a lot of 2nd year - 7 weeks in fact! With the help of steroids though I got through my degree and graduated with a 2:1 in June.

Since June though my Crohn's has been terrible. Most days going to the loo 10 or more times a day. They tried me on steroids again but they didn't help. There has been talk of infliximab, however, I managed to get on to an Elemental diet as I heard many good reports about this. However, 2 weeks into it and I am still getting a lot of diarrhea even though I'm on the liquid diet with no solids. This is all getting me down currently - both mentally and physically. Lost a stone of weight over the last month. Anyway that is where I am at currently. I hope to find out a lot more about this horrid disease on this forum.

Thank you for reading. I hope I haven't bored you with this LONG story :)

Calum: Welcome! Lots of great people, information and experience here with a huge dose of understanding.

I've always enjoyed this quote from Groucho Marx: "I don't care to belong to a club that accepts people like me as members."

There is a lot of very good information to be found here and searching through past and present threads may help you find some answers. One thing to remember is that everyone's experience is a little different with lots in common. CD is a bit frustrating, but with a little help from your friends you can find your way through.

Glad you found this forum, and I look forward to your future posts.

Welcome Calmac!
I have only been here a couple months.... and Everyone here is very kind and supportive.
Sorry you are having such a hard time right now. I hope you get past this flare real soon.
You are not alone.

Hi Calum and :welcome:

Sorry you had to find your way here but glad just the same as this is a fab place for support and info plus there's loads of members around your age!

Sad to hear that things are not going well for you. :( How long do you think you will stick with the elemental diet? and when is your next visit to the GI?

Stick around and browse the forums and please keep us posted on how you are going. If you have any questions just fire away and we will do our best to help and nothing is TMI around here. Good luck and welcome aboard!

Take care, :)

Hi Calum
and welcome fellow Brit

sorry everything's gone Pete Tong!!
Push for the Infliximab, and if the Elemental isn't doing you any good, stop and try a low residue diet instead, you can find this on the Wiki.
Glad you found us, always someone here to help, any questions, just shoot!
lotsa luv

Welcome. It's wonderful that you managed to graduate while dealing with all of that. I recently came down with Crohn's in middle age and I'm just in awe of how well you young people handle it. I know that you're feeling a little down right now, but from what I've learned on this forum so far, this disease has ups and downs, so you will get better. By the way, what is a 2:1?

Calmac, nice to know someone is in the exact same position as I am.

I'm also 22, and just finished my degree at University. Although I found if I just went part-time to University, it was easier to manage when I'd have flareups.

Thank you everyone for your kind welcoming comments and reading my post. We all have so much in common and hopefully together we can alleviate many of our symptoms.

BigUglyCat - Thank you. Nice quote! Yes I really think this forum will be so helpful.

roundtuit- Thanks for the welcome. Yes I hope it helps me as much as it has obviously helped you!

DustyKat - I am still on the elemental diet, however I am still have lots of trips to the bathroom and losing weight after 3 weeks on the diet. Starting to think it may not be working unfortunately :(

Dexky - He said give it a go for 4 weeks then review and if it was working then another 4 weeks. Then onto the elimination diet. BUT, it now looks unlikely i'll get to this stage as I am still running to the toilet a lot and loosing more weight.

Astra101 - Yes another brit on the forum! Yes it is now looking like Infliximab is the final option for me.

tmgread - Thanks for the kind words. A 2:1 is a second class honours first division degree.

salwill88 - Congratulations!! Good on you for getting your degree. It is very hard to get through uni with this disease however, we both managed it :)

Hi there! I've just joined too, and have found everyone so friendly and helpful so far!!!

I am currently in a similar situation, I have just been diagnosed, and am in my final year of university!!! It's been a struggle and am concerned I wont be able to get through it...but hopefully I will be able to and get a 2:1 like you did! That's fantastic that you got a 2:1 by the way, you should be very proud!!!

Did you inform your university of your CD? If you did, did you find your uni to be helpful?

Kelsea xx

Hi Kelsea.

We are both newbies!! Thanks very much. I was really pleased to get a 2:1. Congratulations on being in your final year. That is a great achievement as I only know to well how hard my years were at Reading. The disease can really bite hard at times and affect many aspects of university life. The social one was very big. I just couldn't handle vast quantities of alcohol. The times I did fall to peer pressure, I felt very ill for the next few days. Just not worth it.

I'm sorry to hear you have had a struggle but keep positive! YOU WILL do well in your final year and will meet your target!! Good luck!!

That should defo be our forum quote lol.

Read our posts and wiki site. You may feel that stopping eating certain foods may help..some reason my nurse doesnt thinkj its food related but ive improved loads keeping certain things from my diet
