I have been diagnosed with crohn's disease for 7 years. 6 years in the minor catergory, but now after surgery I am now major. I initially had symptoms in my bowel, then my tounge and just lately in my intestines.
I had a 47cm section taken out of my small intestines which I thought for 6mths was 'just' a stomach ache.It wasn't. Once I found out what the problem was, I had to choose one of the next two fridays to have it removed. Once it was removed I was fine. Since surgery I am now on 3 x50mg Imuran tablets a day and a penthasa sachet morning and night. I've also read up on most crohn's sufferers including cod liver oil supplements, so I take 1 of those a day aswell.
This is my 1st winter in Sydney on Imuran and I have come across a little hiccup. I have caught a cough which tickles the back of the throat when talking and its hard to get a sentence out. Its been 7weeks with it. I can't seem to shrug it after multiple antibiotics and saline gargles.
A throat specialist has now spoken to my gastro specialist and the both of them have decided to reduce my imuran from 3 tablets to only 1 a day for two weeks while my antibiotics takes its course. Flu symtoms have also crept in so I've got my fingers crossed it works.
They just think my imune system is not quite strong enough.
Haven't missed a day of work or been lying in bed sick, its just uncomfortable and annoying.
My Nemesis is MILK products, as long as i keep away from products which are primarily based on milk I should be okay. I love chocolate so I spoil mysely sometimes. Desserts at restaurants, xmas or parties are a no go zone.
I'm enjoying life as a crohn's sufferer but I never hold back on getting out there and living life.
My wife, kids and I have just made a decision to sell everything (ie business and home) and travel round Australia for 12-18mths.
I have been also told to reduce my stress levels so what's a better way to do that than to travel Oz and make a sea change. We will re locate somewhere north in the warmer weather where we can live life, be comfortable and get away from this fast and expensive Sydney city life.

Hi there and a hearty welcome to you! I'm glad you joined :) I'm sorry to hear of your nagging cough though :(

As for your cough and flu-like symptoms, I'm surprised they didn't try taking you off Pentasa considering those are reasonably common side effects of it. When you click through to that article know that Pentasa is a formulation of mesalamine.

I'm really excited for you that you're making such a lifestyle change! Good for you :) Happy travels and we're here for you every step of the way that you need us.

All my best to you.

Please keep us updated on how you are getting on
