Ok I need some suggestions on what to do. My son is almost 9, when he turned 3 he always has a constant cough. I have had everything checked allergies, u name it we had it checked. Docs decided maybe it was physiological :-( I was diagnosed with Crohns in Jan. 2010. Right after my diagnosis my son was having d all the time tummy aches etc witch he has had all his life. I took him to his pediatrics and they ran tons of tests and called me back and told me it was prodisola (sp) and put him on flagel witch the put me on when I was diagnosed with crohns, anyway he gained about 5 lbs and was so healthy felt great, now he is complaining of tummy problems again. Every time he eats he runs to the restroom, I notice it after he usually has milk, so we are trying to cut that out. He was in the hospital 2 weeks ago and they did a mri and said it did not look like crohns it looked like he had tons of gas. I just don't know what to do and I don't want to seem like a crazy person that found out that I have crohns and thinks everyone in my family does. That is how the docs make me feel.

I know as a mom , you worry, no matter who tells you not to. He could be lactose intollerant and or gastroenitis. Just avoid dairy products, he could outgrow it but for now avoid all. Also eggs create gas. Keep a dairy of his intake and you have to get him to tell you honestly what he eats at school or you may not know what is causing it. So sorry you are dealing with this, try not to panic , unless your husband or his family has IBD the incidence of him having it is low. Let us know how he does ok? Hugs.

If I were in your shoes I would cut out dairy products all the way--no more "trying". See if he does better.

Don't worry about seeming like a crazy person. As you learn more about Crohn's and your son you will hopefully be able to see more and more if he has it or not, but at the get go, it's not like you have trained all your adult life in medicine, so all you can do is use what knowledge you have to understand your observations.

Protozoa. http://www.tulane.edu/~wiser/protozoology/notes/intes.html At that link, you can read about post Giardia lactose intolerance, which looks spot on with your descriptions. But I'm no doctor either--just a reader. It seems like an important question though: could you ever identify how you got the giardia or whatever protozoa you had?

As for chronic cough, there are a few things like asthma, or maybe something like GERD where you have esophageal irritation. Then there's cigarette smoke which is said to cause most chronic coughing. Your doctor probably checked everything common off the list though.

A friend of mine has a little boy he is only 3 and is lactose intollerant if he has any he has a lot of trouble with his stomach, D and he gets very dribbly. It gives him a nasty cough if he has any dairy and its constant he now doesn't have any dairy and has rice milk and other alternatives it has changed him completely for the better. The only thing is he loves cheese so it's sad when he cant have it but it is for the better... He did have some on his birthday a small amount and you could tell the difference straight away. Hope this helps a bit and that your son feels better soon.
