my story

Hi, just to let you all know i am by no means a writer so please cope with me on my writing. i am 27 years old and have a wonderful wife for 5 years and a 2.5 year old daughter and 9 month old son, i am a building contrator and have another buisness in manufacturing and desighning eps mouldings.

Ive been diagnosed with crohns about 8 months ago starting from a flare up at work, i was feeling a little out of it about a year before i had the first flare up and was always thinking to my self that i was litterally dying from something what i think now was the lack of my body absorbing any nutrition. the framing contracting company is a very physical and mental job, usually consisting of 10-12 hr days through the hot summers and cold winters (we get everything here in Canada). I noticed i was losing weight over that one year about a pound every month starting from my average weight of 170 lbs what i thought was to be small for 6'1''. so just before the flare up i was around 165 and then for 3 days of what was the flare up i droped down to 150 and was in and out of the hospital for a weekend, the docs first thought it was my appendix and then did a x-ray i think if i remember correctly and found that i was flared up in the bowels so they put me on pain killers and set me up with a specialist who was on holidays for 4 weeks so i had to wait till then to see him.
the gi i guess what you call them in short form on this site seen me for about 5 mins and said yeah im flared up and i need a colonoscopy, so he put me on pred till i had the scope in 4 weeks what then clarified that i did have crohns.
so i was on pred from last August to October and gained 25 lbs back putting at 175 which made me feel at the top of the world in years, feeling that good let me know that i was sick for a good 2 years. My problem is ignoring pain and to know when to give in b/c on the job site when you get shot by a nail gun you just pull it out and keep working so i have alot to learn about listening to pain.
So since October to now i have been put on 200mg of novo-azathioprine but backed down to 175mg b/c lately i am losing weight and feeling really fuzzy, weak, and tired. all my bm are 2-4 days apart and are diareah and painfull but no blood which never expierenced yet.
i just went and seen my gi yesterday on short notice to let him know whats going on and he thinks i have constipation(?) help me out on that. and i ask if i may be low on nutrients and then he says most crohns patients are low on b12.
so im thinking why wouldnt he let me know 6 months ago about that and do blood work regarding it, so he is working on getting me appointment for the test in about 3 weeks which i cant wait i have a family to support and 2 buisness's to run.
So im hoping i can get some input on what i should do to get back up and running.
i just started taking triple strength omega3 2 days ago and am feeling a little better in the head but still no energy.
i hope you can make out what i wrote as i can swing a hammer alot better.
thank you.

Welcome Nater and hang in there man.

Try to let the stress roll off you if you can and when you get the chance to relax do it and be grateful for the down time. I was working like dog too when I got sick. The company was falling behind on payroll and things looked grim. I am sure that worrying over work compounded a minor flare of IBD and turned it into a complete nightmare for me.

My advice is lay off the meats at dinner if you can. No fried stuff. Eat fish and other easy to digest food. Take some meal supplements to work with you like Ensure or Boost. My Gf found the stuff on sale at Wallmart and places for a lot less then at the drugmarts. Eat light, often and stay the heck away from the cantina truck and chip wagons! lol I know they are mostly closed for the winter anyway but still heheh you know what I mean :)

Oh and take a multi vitamin, I used to say vitamins were for kids and girls! lol now I take one religiously every day.

I worked Landscape construction and more recently Golfcourse maintenance these past 10 years, I know how this feels. You'll get through it.

Hey Welcome,

so much to get your head round at first but you came to the right place.

I would definitely load up on the supplements, I take everything my local chemist sells which claims to aid digestive health.

Also have you found Ensure? It's nutritionally complete, and would probably be a very convenient solution in your line of work....

Pain... Tough one.... In some ways it's great you can ride through it.. Do you really want to be more in touch with it, or more in touch with your general physical well bring?

Anyways, you will get heaps from these guys... Good luck!

(and you write just fine!)

:welcome:!
Where in Canada?! The medical system here can be frustrating for sure....Nice to not have to bankrupt for medical care, but frustrating not to have the quality of care sometimes. :(

Welcome fellow Canadian Crohnie!!! You have been through quite a bit, but the good thing (if there is one) is you dont bleed and that is half the battle. As Kenny points out your diet is crucial when you are flaring. Yes, I know most men are meat eaters, my husband is one of them and has a physical laboured job in the mines and you need protein but too much can aggrivate the gut. Most men as a general rule dont drink water, and that is very important to help stop constipation. Kenny is right stay off the coffee truck and avoid dairy. This is really hard but once you see a specialist in Canada your appointments are closer together. Remicade could be a lifesaver for you but it is costly, here in Canada one IV was 4 grand! There is 3 at shorter intervals, so maybe Humira, being cheaper and more convienient may help. Being low in B12 is not good, having a shot once a month will help. Once you get your blood work done you Gi or doc should get your pain and Crohn's under control.

Good luck and keep us posted, you came to the right place for support!

Welcome! You've come to the right place for advice and support! I just joined as well, and have gotten alot of good things off this site :)

My dr just told me to get some B12, that it will help with energy levels. Get your bloodwork done and see what they say.

Nater, if you are in pain and you are vomiting you could be having bowel obstructions, and a fever could mean you are also infected. Do you have pain in the LRQ??? If the pain gets bad I would go to emerge.

if you go pack your patience. It's all pretty much a wast of time until they put you in the Ct machine. One place did an ultrasound and all that got me was trip to Kingston for the Ct scan. Hope they have one near you.

i went to a walk in last night and had an x-ray done and found no blockage.
the doc just told me to take tylonol 3 and he gave me a shot of gravel, it was a very painful sleep last night but do feel better this morning.
do you think i should try to get a ct scan still? b/c i feel that this doc didnt know much about crohns.
thanks.

Yes, have a CT Scan, apparently I was one of the few who got blessed with a new procedure here in Canada and it shows alot more. I had an Intestine only Scan. Be careful with Tylenol 3's they are binding, constipation, so drink Ensure Plus to help you keep weight on and feel better. Hope you get some relief soon!

Welcome :) I hope you are feeling better, and I would go get what caused that checked out. My doctor wants me to even notify him when I have a fever over 101, especially if it lasts for more than a day.

I just got back from the hospital and they x-rayed again, did a bunch of blood test and hooked me up on IV. 4 of the 6 blood test came back normal and still waiting on 2 results, x-ray was fine but wouldnt do ct scan b/c my symtoms are to simular to a flu that is going around right now. so basically the doc says in 2 days or so we should be able to see what the problem is. the good part is that the blood test women has crohns as well and had the same GI as me but stoped him and went natural, she as well has mixed feelings about the GI that i have.

is there many on here that go natural methods, i know it can get argumentive when it comes to drugs vs. natural.

Nater when you say and XRAY what kind? Regular xrays dont show anything, so I was wondering. Before Christmas I had a wicked chest flu that turned into Pnumonia and an ear infection. They kept me isolated because it was H1N1 scare at that time. I was on antiobiotics two separate occassions. I had an IV and flagyl because I was so sick I couldnt eat. BTW NOT all Gi's are equal, I had an excellent one in Brampton and terrible one in Sault Ste Marie and now a great one again. Switch doctors or something to get treated. You very well may have the flu but are you in pain? Great deal of pain? And if so where? Hang in there.

I have done the natural route, the med route, done it all. It depends on how your body heals with either one. Of course Natural is good if it keeps your Crohns down, there are other choices, LDN is one, Dan Bergy on here is doing well on it.

Take care. Keep us updated and sorry for all the questions.

:welcome: Nater! I'm a little late getting on this thread for some reason! Sorry you are having such a rough time!! Hope it is just the flu that you have, glad you aren't blocked. If you are asking for opinions on drugs vs. natural - my opinion is do both. And what I mean is take your vitamins and supplements (fish oil etc) to help support your system - but also take maintenance meds for your disease. If you drop off of your maintenance meds and start having chronic inflammation - even if it is low level inflammation - you could cause scarring over the long term and possibly set yourself up for needing surgery. It is best to stay on top of the inflammation and unfortunately, most of us will have a reoccurence of the disease without the meds.

Now, with that said - you feeling crappy like you are may be due to the medication you are currently on. If a few more days pass and you are still feeling exactly the same way - you really need to try and get back in to see your GI. At least make sure all the regular blood tests that they take to make sure the Aza isn't effecting your liver are in normal ranges.

Good luck buddy - let us know how you are doing!

hi all thanks for all the help again, today i am feeling better for pain wise but still feeling dizzy. i took some Ensure last night but made me feel sick, so took i it again this morning and feel fine with it now. As for blood work for the novo-azathioprine the gi says its all fine, but does that mean i wont get side effects from it is any body on this med here or was and had any effects.
oh and the x-ray was just tthe regular one b/c they think its just the flu which i hope it is but then if this is how im going to handle flu's then that just as bad as an flare up for taking time off. i was in alot of pain yesterday probally a 8.5/10 and the pain is all mostly on my lower left under my stomach
what is LDN jettalady?
thanks everyone and hope u have a good weekend.

Hi Nater I found some information, all these guys are pretty intelligent and sauvy on LDN. Kev is one of our moderators but isnt on here much and he is from your area.

I had dizzy feeling for 2 weeks, pretty scary it was due to the Flu I had. Such a mess I was then, it was in October month I think. Lots of info on Natural stuff, like I said Dan Bergy is quite familiar with LDN. I was going to try but wasnt stable enough. Plus I am female lol, TMI lol.

Welcome Nater - sorry I'm a bit late!!! Lots of great people here, with lots of support and information. Glad you have joined us :)
