Hello,

So I see my GI doc today to follow up after a hospital visit due to an abdominal abscess. I'm feeling the best I have felt in months!!! I no longer need any pain meds, however I would really like a script filled for the Norco I was on just to keep in my medicine cabinet so if I ever need it in the future.

Would it be unreasonable for me to ask him this? I am relatively new to this doc so maybe I just don't know til I ask? I don't want him thinking I am a pill head or something but I feel as a Crohn's patient I should have something for pain on hand... thoughts?

i dont think its silly but then he might want to see you if you are in pain rather thsn covering it up with the pain meds.

He can only say no, you have nothing to loose.

Norco contains hydrocondone, which is an opiate, but it's classified as a schedule 3 drug, meaning it's not believed to carry as high a risk of addiction/abuse as a schedule 1 or 2 drug.

I don't think your request is unreasonable, but if you really want a refill, I think you'll need to provide your doctor with a better reason. Doctors normally will not write prescriptions for narcotic pain meds. on a "just in case" basis, anymore than they'll write prescriptions for antibiotics "just in case" you happen to get another bacterial infection. Federal law actually prohibits doctors from prescribing controlled meds for any purpose other than to meet the "present and immediate needs of the ultimate user" and doctors can face sanctions for violations.

But Crohn's is a chronic condition and professional opinions vary. You never know until you try.

I agree that it couldn't hurt to ask, but I have no personal experience here, as not one of my doctors ever offered a prescription to pain meds for me, in all these years.

I have IC of the bladder and when that pain comes it is severe. I asked my regular doctor and she gave me a script for percocets for just in case as well as Tylenol 3's. I do not take them often as I have bad side effects to these type meds unfortunately. So I only take it if I am literally dying in pain and am desperate. I do NOT think it is unreasonable to ask for a script for them. I mean what are you suppose to do when you have a period of severe pain, and what happnens if it happens on a weekend or holiday( like it usually always does) when no one is around?? I mean who can afford to run to the ER???? I think the doctor should give it to you since you have a painful condition.
