Hello this is my first time posting on here and not sure on how i should go about things. I am 24 i have not be diagnosed with anything but i do have family history of crohn's. My mother had crohn's and her father also had it and they both past away from the disease. Within the last year or so i have been having more and more stomach and bowel problems that have made me concerned. I have had problems with severe stomach pains with constipation and or diarrhea nausea and other things. I know it doesnt sound like much but given the history i am concerned. I just wanted to know what pre-emptive tests i could have done or even where i could have them done. I have mentioned this to my doctor before and they just said that i shouldnt worry at this point in my life. If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Gabriel,

I am sorry to hear that some of your family have also suffered with Crohns.

I would say if you think you might be beginning to get symptoms to ask for a blood test at the very least. Although this is will not be conclusive evidence of Crohns it might show up if you have any inflammation.

Aside from that there is colonoscopy/MRI/CT etc which would show things in more detail.

Where abouts in the world are you? I'm in the UK and got reffered to the hospital by my doctor

Hope that helps :) x

Hi Gabriel and welcome :)

It's understandable that you're concerned, especially with your recent symptoms and family members with Crohn's Disease. The good news is that the statistics are on your side. Depending on what study you look at, you have around a 5-15% chance of getting CD due to your family correlation. I realize it's easy to focus on the potential there, but that means you probably WON'T.

With that said, I would suggest:

1. Eating a healthy, well-balanced diet
2. Getting plenty of vitamin D. If you don't spend enough time in the sun, supplement.
3. If you can stomach it, eat liver a couple times a month. The vitamins and minerals in it will do wonders for you.
4. Reduce stress as much as you can.
5. Find a doctor who will take your concerns seriously.

I wish you all the best!

To help ease your mind or confirm your suspicions, :eek2: , why not go to your GP and explain your concerns and the symptoms you are experiencing and ask if he could run some blood tests...Full Blood Count, Liver Function Tests, ESR & CRP (inflammatory markers), Vitamin D, B12, Folate and Iron Stores.

Also, if you aren't already, start tracking your symptoms. Have a look at the suggestions we have in the wiki...

Good luck!
