Never Ending saga of UC

hi Daniel,
I know how you feel. its a tough job sometimes being chronically ill.
1st stop stressing. stress is bad just go with the flow.
have you tried giving your bowel a rest? maybe try a liquid diet for a few days.
no fruit or veg or wholegrain. fibre increases diarrhoea and makes the bowel work faster.
I was in the same boat last year. steroids didn't work for me at all or 5asa's. they made me much worse. remicade gave me relief straight away.
you mentioned 7 infusions. did you mean remicade?
I went on a low residue diet (that I hated but needs must).
have you tried nicotine or medical marijuana?
there are loads of alternative and ideas in the forums. take time to read and chill a bit.

Sorry to hear what you are going through. My wife got DX with UC when she was 24 (she is now 57 and we have been married for 38 years) My wife ended up having a "J pouch" at age 28 and that was good for about 20years. Life was normal, then the scar tissue was getting so bad that she was sick becouse she couldn't pass anything. She ended up having a permante ileostomy 4 years ago and now she is good a new. The UC will never come back again and we are both happy for that. She didn't like it for the first 3-4 weeks but now she says it was the best thing she has ever done.

Hey Daniel, welcome to the forum!

Are you on Remicade now? What medication/treatment are you on except the prednisone? Have you had 5-ASA, or immunosupressive therapy?

As others have said, there are a few tricks you can try, including:
-Avoiding fiber, which means no wholegrain/wheat bread or pasta, no uncooked fruits or vegetables
-Avoiding lactose
-Avoiding gluten
-Avoiding irritants such as caffeine and alcohol
-Medical marijuana

These are palliative though, but they can make a big difference. As Jim says, surgery might be an option for you if your disease has reached a point you consider too debilitating and you're fed up of dealing with the flares.

Has you doctor discussed the long-term plan when it comes to your UC?

I don't wish surgery on you, but it was the best decision I made concerning UC. If at some point you are contemplating colectomy, head over to the stoma subforum and have a look around. I have had a J-pouch formed, but have chosen to stick with the ileostomy for the time being. I am loving my new life!

I've had the same problem at one point where no medication would help even prednisone. that's when my doctor recommended a clear liquid diet for a day or two, and then bland foods(toast, noodles, white rice, etc.) for a week and that seemed to help me. One thing is stress doesn't help with having UC so my suggestion is to try and relax, and try your best not to stress.
Hope this information helps you. Hope you feel better soon :)
