Never tried "drugs" for my Crohn's before, looking for some advice

Hey Everyone!

This is my first post on the forum and it's very exciting to have found a community where I can learn from all of your shared experiences.

My background - I was diagnosed about 13 years ago at age 12 (I'm 25 now).

About 6 years ago I had major flare up and puncture that led to an intestinal resection surgery where 9 inches of my intestine (the end of the small bowel and start of the large bowel) were removed. Since then I've more or less been in decent remission except for some small stress related flares here and there. I've had prednisone over the years for 1-2 moths at a time to treat some flareups but its effectiveness is now quite poor.

In terms of treatment I haven't been doing to much. I watch what I eat - I don't keep a strict diet but I know what things generally don't sit well with me.

Time to try something new? In general I feel pretty good, but not great. I'm able to travel and live a very normal life but I always wonder if I could feel better and have more energy, less frequent bowel movements and gas (I typically have a more liquidy movement 2 or 3 times a day), etc.

I recently had a colonoscopy that showed some moderate inflammation in my small bowel. My doctor is recommending I try Remicade (his first choice) or some other biologic like Humira.

Is it worth trying? As I said I feel pretty good (no flares in the last year but always some symptoms) but there's definitely a sense that I could feel better. I've never tried any types of longer term drug treatments before (only prednisone for a few weeks at a time for flares) so I really don't know how I would react. The idea of being on medication for years at a time always scared me.

I'm worried about my "moderate" inflammation getting worse and creating scarring, but considering that I feel pretty stable is it worth rocking the boat with drugs that I might not react well to?

Has anyone else been in a similar situation where Remicade or something similar actually helped them go from good to great?

Thanks in advance!

I had the chance of trying remicade/humira or having part of my bowels taken out. I chose remicade, and havent looked back since.

I still do get bad days but they are very few and far between and even then, they aren't actually that bad tbh. It's given me a new lease of life which I am so grateful for.

I would suggest trying them, then seeing for yourself if its worth the hassle. Being dependent on drugs isnt that bad in my eyes. I actually ride a bike 7miles to and from the hospital for my bloods and infusions, something I would never had been able to do 2 years ago

Hi and welcome. Having inflammation is a problem even if you don't feel terrible. You are right to be concerned about inflammation.

In short, its definitely worth going on remicade or humira to deal with it.

Hope you feel great soon.

Hi there! I've not been treated with a biologic, but Remicade got my brother's Crohn's under control.

Ditto to the previous posters - uncontrolled Crohn's is definitely worse than med dependency.

Not about Remicade, but just wanted to throw this out for you: There is currently a clinical trial going on in Vancouver, studying Site Specific Immunomodulation (SSI) as a treatment for Crohn's. This is something I myself am extremely excited about - I unfortunately don't qualify for the current study as my Crohn's isn't gut-active. BC is quite a long ways from you, but thought I'd point you to some resources in case this study is something you want to look into:

Tangents aside, getting your inflammation under control is what's important. Glad you are researching your options!

You have active inflammation, you are NOT in remission. Any sign or symptom of Crohn's means your disease is active and damaging your GI tract. The fact you "feel" stable means nothing, there is little nervous tissue in this area of your body so there can be quite a bit of damage going on while you "feel" fine. If you ignore this now you're going to regret your choice. Especially since biologics are not particularly risky - their short term cancer risk was recently challenged in a rather comprehensive metastudy and their own dangerous side effects are rare at best. The common, mild side effects are sporadic respiratory infections and injection/infusion site reactions, which are a bit of itching, redness, and if you're unlucky - a lowgrade fever. I don't know about you but pretending you're fine while you're sick instead of taking a safe, effective drug for your illness seems like a bum deal to me.

InkiStinky, thanks for sharing that study. I'll see if McMaster University in Hamilton is getting involved.
