Hi, I am a 40 year old who suffered from Crone's for many of my forty years. I wasn't actually diagnosed until about 6 yeas ago. I currently have no heath insurance and have not taken any prescription medication for about the past 5 years. I recently tried taking Beano and Gasx for relief after the suggestion from a fellow Crone's sufferer who is also my friend. She takes Pentasa and has good health insurance. Her doctor suggested Beano and Gasx for additional relief and this helps her when she is feeling particularly miserable so she suggested this to me.
If possible, I have actually noticed that these two over the counter meds have actually made me feel worse; more bloated and crampy than before taking these. I notice that I don't need to make as many trips to the restroom when taking these but they seem to make me feel a whole lot worse. Can this be possible? Has anyone else experienced this or am I just completely nuts? I am feeling so terrible tonight that this prompted me to post my first ever question or comment online regarding my condition.
Any comments on this would be much appreciated.

Thank you for letting me join this group and thank you for any info you may have on this.

Thanks to all who replied. Pen, my Crohn's is primarily affected in the bottom to middle right section of my gut. I had 12" of intestine removed back in 2002 when I was diagnosed with it. It was so bad that I could not even stand up. I let it get way too out of hand before having no choice but to go to the hospital. Although the then present affected portion of my intestine was removed, the doctor pretty much assured me it would be back again some day. Lately, within the past year, it's been getting much worse. The day's usually start out good but by around 3 PM, I usually want to just about die. I did take Prednisone back in '02 but I remember that it didn't do the trick and I went on Enticot (sp), which helped for a while. Slowly, after the surgery, I began feeling better and time went on and jobs changed...etc...etc. and here I am again. Not sure if it's going to end up being as bad but I know this past year has been quite miserable at times.

Thanks again to you all, I wish you all well!

Hi Mike...

I'm 46, been diagnosed for 18 years (when I had my surgery), and began suffering symptoms five years before that.

I've gone through long periods without treatment (either in remission, or managing on my own).

When you hit a rough patch, sometimes it's hard to know what's causing what: You just feel altogether crappy and in pain.

I can't handle stuff like Beano or Imodium when I'm like that. Those little packets of Gastrolyte powder mixed with water are a lot gentler on me and are generally effective.

Thanks to all of you!
It saddens me to know that the health care system is in shambles. OTC; Phayzyme, and Motrin almost to the point of OD. This combination worked for me like Morphine. Motrin is not good for Crohnes, but it works. Try, what do you have to loose. Phayzyme makes Gas X look like Asprin. I think the main ingredient is Smyithcone. Forgive my spelling, the screen is becomming a black hole in my eyes.
