Hi..everyone.My son is twenty and just dx with Crohns. I thought he had an ulcer...but after colonoscopoy Crohns was confirmed. He is currently on Entocort but after a month on this, he is still having stomach pain every day.Now the cpain has moved higher...so the doc said to tyr Prolosic ...maybe the meds are now giving him heartburn. He is now urinating alot in the middle of the night, and he always has the chills...although no fever. He is just not feeling well...how long do these meds take to work? Any imput would be helpful...Debbie

Hi Snowball.. Must be a frightening time for you.. I hope you find comfort & solace in this site. Welcome. As for your son's situation... welll, first off, none of us here are medically trained.. mostly just fellow sufferers who share their hard won wisdom. It is also hard to comment as everyone is different, and you weren't specific on Crohns i.e. is it crohns disease or crohns colitis? There is a vast difference in the prognosis. Heartburn from meds is common.. I experience it periodically.. check the info on the meds.. follow their recommendations as to the best method, time, with or w/o food, etc.. Get him into a routine that works best least possible side effects/drug interactions. Increase in urine output is common too... either due in part to more fluid intake... i.e. I drink a min of 64 fluid ounces each and every day.. partly due to the anti-inflamatory action of some meds.. As for fever/chills.. they're common too.. esp with involvement of the colon.. Not sure why.. I can't regulate my body temp anymore.. I often start off with chills... then with any minor or major flare I will suffer from fever.. On the positive side, you have a definite diagnosis, and in relatively short order.. That's generally a rarity. For me, diagnosis took years, and it is still sort of 60/40 whether I've got CD or UC. After diagnosis, it took months for me to work out a regimen of drugs, diet, enzymes, and probiotics to get stable. Start by developing a good relationship w your sons GI. And if you don't have a GI (not a GP) first item is to find him one..
Need to start keeping a journal or diary.. note all food items consumed, effect they have the following days, all treatment, all meds, all hospital visits or dr consults. It may be extremely difficult to get a 20 yr old to accept his role in his recovery. I've got 2 about that age, and oddly enuff they're both as stubborn as I was at their age.. go figure. Anyway, in the overall scheme of things, a crohns diagnosis is not the end of the world.. It is hard, but one can learn to live with it, and quite well..

not sure if that helps you now... sure that you'll hear from plenty of others here..

Take care, keep your chin up... pass along my best well wishes to your son, okay?

I agree about monitoring the food intake. When I was first diagnosed, the GI didn't restrict any foods from me. In fact, when I came into the office for an appointment, he'd offer me a soda or coffee which aren't real good for me.

When you're first diagnosed there's a tendency to go into denial about it. Your son may be trying to eat what he always has, and in the same amounts. Just a guess. A lot of those with Crohn's eat smaller meals rather than 3 meals a day. Of course, you probably know all this.

About the steroids, when they put me on Prednisone, it took effect with in the first week I think. But everyone responds to the meds differently and many times a doctor will try to different ones until finding one that works.

I know this probably doesn't help much but I hope he finds relief soon.

Entocort causes dydpepsia in around 9% of people. That might be the cause of the upper abdominal pain.

It can also cause urination problems including an increase in nighttime urination.

Snowball,
My son is also 20 and was diagnosed with Crohns this past year in January. He had resection surgery in May. My heart goes out to you-I know how difficult it is to see your child ill! This is the hardest ordeal I have ever faced. If there is ever anything I can do just yell-being able to talk with someone else in the exact situation can be so very helpful.
Take care-
Ramona
