Hi Snowball.. Must be a frightening time for you.. I hope you find comfort & solace in this site. Welcome. As for your son's situation... welll, first off, none of us here are medically trained.. mostly just fellow sufferers who share their hard won wisdom. It is also hard to comment as everyone is different, and you weren't specific on Crohns i.e. is it crohns disease or crohns colitis? There is a vast difference in the prognosis. Heartburn from meds is common.. I experience it periodically.. check the info on the meds.. follow their recommendations as to the best method, time, with or w/o food, etc.. Get him into a routine that works best least possible side effects/drug interactions. Increase in urine output is common too... either due in part to more fluid intake... i.e. I drink a min of 64 fluid ounces each and every day.. partly due to the anti-inflamatory action of some meds.. As for fever/chills.. they're common too.. esp with involvement of the colon.. Not sure why.. I can't regulate my body temp anymore.. I often start off with chills... then with any minor or major flare I will suffer from fever.. On the positive side, you have a definite diagnosis, and in relatively short order.. That's generally a rarity. For me, diagnosis took years, and it is still sort of 60/40 whether I've got CD or UC. After diagnosis, it took months for me to work out a regimen of drugs, diet, enzymes, and probiotics to get stable. Start by developing a good relationship w your sons GI. And if you don't have a GI (not a GP) first item is to find him one..
Need to start keeping a journal or diary.. note all food items consumed, effect they have the following days, all treatment, all meds, all hospital visits or dr consults. It may be extremely difficult to get a 20 yr old to accept his role in his recovery. I've got 2 about that age, and oddly enuff they're both as stubborn as I was at their age.. go figure. Anyway, in the overall scheme of things, a crohns diagnosis is not the end of the world.. It is hard, but one can learn to live with it, and quite well..
not sure if that helps you now... sure that you'll hear from plenty of others here..
Take care, keep your chin up... pass along my best well wishes to your son, okay?
