Hi everyone,

Thought i would also share my story and talk to others who also have crohn's. My last year of college i went from 175lbs to 118lbs. After my exams i checked myself into the hospital cause after a number of months, my DR could not figure out what i had and i had had enough of the vomitting, sleepiness and no appetite. I even went to a holistic healer, none of them could help me. After a few tests at the hospital, they diagnosed me with Crohn's. I was put on prednisone and asacol. After a day or so my appetite increased and began to feel a ton better. I was in the hospital for about a week. After i got out, i changed doctors for the third time and began living a normal life. I was slowly taken off the prednisone and remained on asacol for a while, can't remember how long as it was over 10 years ago.

Over the next 10 years or so everything was going great, i regained my normal weight plus another few punds, i was exercising and having lots of energy. I was able to eat anything i wanted and enjoyed every bit of it, because i was sick for so long i almost forgot what it felt like to feel healthy.

Fast forward to last fall. During the 10 years, my crohn's was basicalyl in remission. I would have an occassional bout but it would only last for a day and i would be back to my normal self within two or three days. Anyway, last fall i started feeling sick, had a couple of flare ups and stomach pains, loss of appetite and once in while i would get this wicked stomach pain and bloating that would last for a few hours. So it would seem that the crohn's had come back. Here i am today, still getting those feelings but more often this time. I had a gastroscopy in Aug which revealed a small irritation at the end of my stomach but it was not related to my crohn's. My GI was trying to figure out why i was getting those wicked stomach pains and bloating and vomiting bouts and thinks it is due to a blockage in my small bowel. He sent me for a small bowel follow through (barium) and there seems to be somthing out of place there, the test was on friday so i'm waiting for the official results.

Anyway, that's where i stand today. It's kind of difficult going through this now as opposed to when i was in college because now i have a wife and two small kids. The crohn's has started to interrupt my everyday life and hopefully we can find something to at least manage it to an acceptable level.

Sorry for the long post. Look forward to talking with everyone.

Hi Rob, welcome to the forum. good luck with those test results, let us know how you make out. as for your current symptoms, try not to jump the gun. Wait and see what your GI & tests have to say. I apparently was in a 10 yr remission even before I was officially diagnosed, so the fact that it can come back after being dormant that long probably comes as more of a shock to you than myself, or others on here. But it may be something else in your case... something that they can correct easily, okay? There's a lot to be said for the power of positive thinking.

Welcome to the forum Rob.

Hi Rob! :)

A big welcome to the forum and I hope you will stick around with more input.

My bout with Crohn's sounds a lot like yours. I was okay for about 10 years after the initial hospitalization, diagnosis and treatment with Prednisone and then Asacol.

Just recently it's reared it's ugly head again and I go in another week or so for a small bowel follow through to see what's up. Possibly a fistula.

Keep a positive attitude as it really does help!

Welcoming hugs~Nancy

Thanks for the positive feedback guys, appreciate it. The specialist performing the small bowel follow through mentioned that there were some abnormalities. Not sure if they were exaggerated because i had one of those episodes the night before the test and maybe my small bowel was extrememly irritated.

I forgot to mention that i have been on salofalk for the last few months, since my symptoms became worse. I don't really notice a significant difference but it's hard to tell.

I guess my biggest hurdle is that i have no idea what sets off one of those episodes, is it food, stress, work, life. But i guess that's the problem with this disease.

How much Salofalk are you taking, and how are you taking it (I know it's pill form, but are you taking it with food, before eating, or after eating?) any side effects from it?

I'm taking 4 grams a day... 1 hour after eating, and with plenty of fluid to wash it down with. It's just an anti inflamatory... meant to reduce inflamation in the colon.

I'm taking 6 500mg pills/day. I take them with my meals and drink plenty of water to wash them down with. I occassionally notice some nausea about 30 min after taking them but i found that the more water i drink the less nausious i feel.

Hey, u r doing better than me when I started taking them.. I was ok at 3 g, but 4 g gave me migraines. I was told by the pharmasist to take them with food, and drink plenty of fluids. I went to the website (Dr Falk) and they said to eat 1st, wait 1 hr, then take with plenty of fluids. Doing that allowed me to take 4 g w/o migraines. I also have stomach issues, but those seem to be more from the food... I haved missed taking my pills on the odd occasion... yet I still get those nasty tummy woes.
Having said that, I on rare occasion have taken them w/o eating... a real big no no.

Sometimes i take them right after i'm done eating and sometimes i wait for 45min to an hour. I honestly don't notice any difference if i take them right after a meal or if i wait a bit. I do notice that they don't co-operate when i take them on an empty stomach, done that a couple of times and not again.

Still waiting to hear back from my GI about the results of my small bowel followthrough last friday. Been feeling really good so far this week. Hopefully things stay this way.
