I had an ileocolectomy 3 weeks ago and have lost a lot of weight since then even though I am eating more than I did before the surgery. Has anyone else had this problem. Also, I have had a headache everday since.

I'm not sure what your operation entailed, did you get a stoma?

If so, it takes a few weeks for your body to adapt, so I wouldn't be overly worried yet. If it continues, I'd go and see your doc.

hi Leah, welcome to the forum :)

three weeks is very early days after surgery, just give yourself time to recover and i'm sure you'll see improvement bit by bit in the days to come. your headaches could be a lingering reaction to anaesthetic, or maybe the position you were lying in, in hospital.. if it persists, i'd say have a chat with your gp, or your surgical team if you're due for a follow-up appointment.

I have an illeostomy . Had it redone once , it takes awhile for the body to adjust for me after the second one about 3 months.

surgery put's a lot of demand on the body.
Remember, growth and repair only happens when we sleep, hence, childern need more sleep than adults, and if you are sick, you sleep more to allow the body to repair.

If you are tired, make sure you are getting enough sleep. rest is not enough for repair to occur.

Hi,I had same surgery 10 years ago.I had gone from11 stone down to 7 in the space of 5 weeks. It was so hard after the surgery to put back on weight even though I was on high doses of steroids. And yes,I was exhausted for months after.Still get very tired when i get flare ups,its a tiredness that sleep just doesnt help with.
Have you tried nutrient drinks?I know I had to drink 4 cartons of ensure a day,for a while after surgery.I always say its harder to put weight on than lose it,I have tried both.I think when your'e underweight your stomach is so small you can only physically fit small amounts of food in.Also remember you will obviously be running to the loo more as the waste has less of a journey now.Rest as much as you can, remember even lying awake n your bed is a good rest and try eating high fat foods for a while. You will be back to yourself soon, don't worry.

Thank you, that makes me feel better. I drink carnation instant breakfast and try to eat small amounts of food all through out the day. One more question. How long did your incisions hurt for? my lower one is very sore when I lean over. Almost like a burning feeling. Anyone else have this problem?

Hi,sorry can't remember how long it hurt,I know after 6 weeks I was back in work and it was still a bit tender. If its worrying you go to your doctor to get it checked out.Not saying yours is but mine got infected and I had to go on antibiotics.I remember taking 3 salt baths a day which I found really helped the healing, stingy though when you first get in.
