Hello to all,

My son, 14, will be starting Imuran tomorrow. He is also on Asacol and just finished 5 months on Prednisone. I will be scouring these posts for any information on nutrition, side effects others have posted and am hopeful that all of your posts will help us through the start of this new phase of life for us.

Blessings to you all.

Hello and welcome to the forum. I'm sorry that you are both going through this tough phase of life. I also have a 14 year old son diagnosed 1 year ago and am pretty new here too. Good luck on your journey :soledance:

Sending you and your son all of the strength you need to get through it <3 Diet and stress play a huge role in IBD. A drastic change in diet can sometimes be hardest on kiddos but effective. If you decide to go that route, I know of some great sites and recipe blogs that follow these intestinal healing diets. You could start him off slow by making him some yummy cookies or cakes :) Eliminating gluten is a very popular "first move" in diet for treating IBD. Let me know if you would like more info ;)

Hi and welcome,
Sorry to hear that your son is going through this and at such a hard age. I'm not very knowledgeable but I know more will be a long with more experience than me.
I hope all goes well. Welcome aboard.

Hi ramittman and :welcome:

Im so sorry to hear about your boy......but you have certainly found the right place for support and info, the folks here are fab!

Both of my children are on Imuran and neither have had issues with it. The main thing to keep in mind first up is that Imuran will take 3 months to become fully therapeutic and for some it is up six months. Secondly, ensure his blood is monitored regularly. Initially this should be weekly for the first month, then fortnightly, then monthly and so on. If this drug works for him then some docs will pan it out to six monthly tests but I personally don't like anything longer three monthly.

Good luck and welcome aboard!

Thanks for all the replies. We are on week 3 with Imuran and Asocal and my son has been doing fine. Weekly blood labs have been in range. He did give me a scare a few weeks ago. Had to take him to the ER for extreme abdominal pain and vomiting. Didn't know if this was a flareup as we have never experienced the pain he had originally before the colonoscopy. Turns out he had eaten some bad fast-food...food poisoning. Hoping he'll learn from this mistake and stop the fast food junk food.

Hi, never had a chance to say welcome since I was on holiday when you posted. My son is 13 and currently inbetween meds. His liver couldn't cope with the Azathiopurine so we are switching to 6mp, but have to wait for bloods to stabalise. Glad your son is doing ok so far. Just wish my poor boy didn't need weekly blood tests - his veins start to disappear after a couple weeks :voodoo:

My son has also been having weekly blood work for the Imuran. Six months ago, it took me 3 HOURS to talk him into getting his first blood work done. He has come a long way, thanks also to the great lab technicians!

Welcome to the forum!

Glad the 'flare' turned out to be something quickly resolved and that he's feeling well!

:)
