Hi!
I'm new to this site but not at all new to crohn's. I was curious how many others have been taking colestid/colestipol for years like me. I was diagnosed in 1994 when I was 26 and am female. My crohn's was contained in the ileum and I had a laparoscopic colon resection where they removed my ileum and appendix (why not, they were there!) in 1996 that was very successful. Since then I have been taking 4 pentasa pills (500 mg each) and one colestipol (1gm) at night before bed. Yes, for 16 years. The colestipol is amazing for me. No side effects that I know of and I rarely have painful or emergency D anymore. However if I ever miss a pill, within 12 hours I have an awful episode and am reminded how I clearly have a disease and how lucky I am that this works for me. I was just reading how you shouldn't take it with other pills though bc it could impact their absorption. Does anyone know anything about that and anyone else having as good of luck with Colestid? Should I be worried that I've been taking this for 16 years? Also I do have very itchy skin - I break out in welts/hives especially in the evening. My dermatologist said it was dermographism - no cause, no cure. My GP was skeptical of that. I am now wondering if its my meds. Any thoughts to share? Thanks.

Hi there and welcome :) I'm really glad you joined our little community!

Frankly, if you haven't been having side effects and you're doing great I wouldn't change much. Yes, drugs like Colestid, Welchol, and even psyllium can affect absorption of medications, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients. In fact, I'm guessing that and the removal of a portion of your ileum is where your itchy skin comes from. My guess is you're experiencing nutrient deficiencies.

Have you had various vitamin levels such as your vitamin B12, folate, and vitamin D checked? I'd be curious about K and E as well since they're fat soluble and Colestid is going to block absorption of fats.

Are you on any supplements like fish oils, vitamins or any such thing?

Again, welcome :)

Hello and :welcome: to the forum. Good to hear that you have done so well for so long. I agree that if the meds are working for you why change them? I do agree that it is worth getting your vit levels checked though.

Am pleased you have decided to join us, there is lots of helpful info and support available here :)
