Hello everyone.

This is my first post. I was diagnosed with Crohn's in early Feb of this year. I am currently on Prednisone, Imuran and various other supplements. I'm doing good so far. Been a few weeks since most symptoms have shown their ugly faces.

I'm on 25 mg of the Pred and I take it in the morning. I take 50mg of Imuran at night. Last night in my sleepy state after hanging out with some friends, I took another 25mg of the Pred instead of my Imuran. I went to bed and woke up in a total panic! I was anxious and nervous (more likely due to freaking out over the double dose than the Pred). Thankfully, I was able to sleep for 6 hours. I called the Druggist this morning and she said I should skip my morning dose today (supposed to taper to 20mg starting today) and take it normally tomorrow. She also said to do the same for the Imuran, taking it normally tonight. She also said I might have a flare today or tomorrow so to be careful for that.

Has anyone else done this? Is it really bad? I am so freaked out about taking drugs and screwing up the dose just makes it more real that I am on some serious meds that can really hurt me if taken incorrectly. Should I call my GI doc?

Thanks!

redapple3, welcome, and Don't Panic! Prednisone will not kill you by taking that small amount. I have been on 60mg dosage per day before - for a few weeks straight, so doubling up to 50mg once won't really do any harm. The panic feeling is most likely your reaction when you realized what you did, but be forewarned that Prednisone can have that effect on people (one possible side effect).

You have definitely come to the right place to ask questions - this forum is full of people that have done just about everything, and experienced things you have never imagined. =)

Feel free to ask any questions you can think of, and enjoy your stay. =)

Good health and best of luck.

I find prednisone make me more prone to anxiety attacks. Dont worry a double dose wont kill you. It happens sometimes.

Welcome Redapple !! Glad you found us. I did take a mouthful and took two extra by mistake but I spit them out.. but that was in 40mg which would of been 50mg.. I miscounted. It should be ok, maybe you should mark it down, we all have days when you think... did I take them? Scary.

Thanks everyone! I will stop worrying.

I did write MORN and NIGHT on the bottles today. I have meds for me and meds for my cat in the same container on top of my fridge and in my sleepiness, things got confusing. At least I didn't take her thyroid meds :)

There's always a bright side, huh?

Last month, when I was prescribed med number 4, I got myself a weeky pill-sorter: it has little compartments for Morning, Noon, Evening, Bedtime of each day. (I think they have smaller sorters with only 3 or 2 conmpartments per day, too) Each week I fill it up with all my meds, and then I can tell at a glance if I took them or not - I tend to second-guess myself alot, and this has reallly helped me make sure I take the right med at the right time!

Welcome aboard red

I wouldn't worry to much about the dose
I've missed a full days meds before, I just continued on the next day like normal no probs
the thing is not to panic an try compensating etc and swapping doses to match etc
that's when things go wrong

while in hospital they would stuff up my meds more than me doubleing up doses etc when I told my doc he said aslong as I know what I take etc and not too double my immuran etc I'll be fine, but as for the pred he said yea that's cool just don't do it all time
once or twice is fine

i take all my meds at once in the morning so as not to miss or skip anything makes it easier

good luck

You should be okay, because there is a delay in prednisone dispersion and it takes a while to flush it out. It's the reason that symptoms like moon face and insomnia can last for weeks after you stop the drug. One night shouldn't cause a flare, but be careful none the less. The druggist's advice seems sound, since you shouldn't take another 25 mg...It's one of those drugs that just takes a while to show changes to that degree, not as much as your Imuran, but much more than say a double dose of loperamide or tylenol.

Don't be afraid of overdose at that level. I was on 180mg/day for a few week and was fine (minus the side effects) and am now down to 100mg/day. From what my Dr told me, there is no max dose for pred so no way to OD. Not like I would want to test the theory but it's good to know just in case I do take the wrong pills, which has almost happened a few times. Gotta love how a lot of them look the same.

Welcome! And as other has said it is no big deal. Just take a deep breath and relax. Stressing will just make things worse.
