Hey all,
Just joined this forum because I need to start taking a more active role in managing my Crohns/colitis. Looking to really revamp my diet and my workout(i currently have no workout plan). I live right across from a gym and have a very health conscious roommate so I shouldn't run into any hiccups in this process. I just have NO idea where to start. Any advice would be MORE than welcome !! I've had Crohn's for almost two years now and need to really start kicking a** about it as far as my health goes. I am on medicine and it does it's part, but now it's my turn! I'm excited, lost and worried so if you have any advice, helpful hints, recipes, anything! I would really appreciate it!

Thanks!!!
Kaye

You'll also find a cooking subforum here.

What meds are you on? How are you feeling currently? I hope you stick around and feel at home here.

Hi Kaye and welcome! You came to the right place to get ideas on better managing your health & Crohn's. As Jessi pointed out, you'll want to visit the Diet & Fitness forum; lots of great ideas there!

As far as exercise, I myself have been wanting to get into yoga. It's a great way to destress and get fit. So, perhaps that is something you want to look into. And with diet, that's tricky because we all have different foods that are safe and off the table (no pun intended). However, many seems to respond well to a gluten and/or dairy free diet. Also, people have had great success with the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. Eliminating certain foods from your diet entirely can be challenging, but with the support of your health conscious roommate, you've got a good shot of being disciplined. Good luck!

Welcome Kaye!

It is great that you want to start really focusing on your health! I would suggest that you start off very slowly though. Exercise can be stressful for your body (especially when it is something you are not as familiar with) so it is important that slowly incorporate movement into your life.

Walking is an activity most people can tolerate and is a good way to start being more active. I would suggest you just focus on getting a bit more activity in during the first week or two through more low impact activities and slowly build up to higher impact activities at the gym.

I know it is hard to slow down when you are motivated to get exercising immediately, but taking slow will help ensure you will turn exercise into a habit and that your body can tolerate the sudden change in activity.

Hi Kaye and welcome! Wow, good for you! That's fantastic that you're going to be taking a much more active role and working out. We'd love to hear about your progress and how you feel during this. If you'd be up for starting a thread in our Diet/Fitness forum that chronicles your journey, that would be amazing. It might help keep you motivated as well. Just an idea of course. No matter what, I wish you all the best :)

Thanks all for the welcome wishes! I'm excited to start this new life plan and look forward to the outcome as I go! I'm currently taking Pentasa 500mg two three times a day and also Canasa supp. 1000mg once a day. They seem to help a lot with my symptoms as long as I remember to take them regularly, I've had a really hard time doing that though because I've never had to take medicine everyday like that before. So, i'm trying harder and it does help.
thanks again!
