Hi everyone,

My name is Jacob and I am 17, I was diagnosed with UC in November 2011. I was given asacol as a treatment but did not last long until I was back in hospital. Then I was given azatheoprine but I have just been taken off that as it was doing something to my liver.
I have had quite a hard time dealing with the fact I have this and wish it did not have to be something that was life long. I feel depressed whenever I think about UC which is everyday really. I still get out though and forget about having UC sometimes but I hate it so much!

Hi Jacob

Sorry to hear about your UC, it is a tough deal. This is a great place to vent though, to people who actually understand what you are talking about. Check out the teens Forum also, I guess there must be something on there for you, wouldnt know, Im not allowed there:)

Hello Jacob and welcome to the forum. Having an IBD is never easy but you have definetly come to the right to get info and support from a great bunch of people :) What meds are you now on beings the Aza has been stopped? Are you still having quite a lot of symptoms? I agree with checking out the teen forum so you can also say hi to people close to your age as I think this can sometimes help.

I do hope you can be feeling better soon

Hello yous two and thanks I will have a look at the teen forum :)

Angrybird, since the aza has been stopped I am not being put on any new meds until my liver goes back to normal, so just asacol for the now.

I am on reducing prednisone aswell but I only have a week left ! I'm quite worried I will have a flare up on only asacol because it never seemed to help last time. I only lasted 4-5 weeks when I finished the reducing prednisone last time.

My symptoms have calmed a lot in the last few weeks and only get a bit of stomach pain every now and then.

Have you been looking at diet at all? Food is not a cause or a cure but perhaps start a food diary where you can note down what in particular causes discomfort and trips to the loo. Things with little nuts and pips can aggrivate the bowel and some peopple have issues with dairy and caffeine etc, just wondering if this may help when coming off the steroids.......

Yeah I have been looking in to diet a bit, I am currently trying to stay wheat free and see if that helps any. A food diary sounds like a pretty good idea I could give that a shot thanks.

I also came across something called the Specific Carbohydrate Diet do you know anything about that and if it has been helpful in some people?

I have not been on it myself but know others here have, one thing I have heard is that you do have to be strict with youself and must not cheat.

Hi Jacob and welcome to the forum. I'm really glad you found your way here. Out of curiosity, where specifically is your stomach pain?

I know many with Ulcerative Colitis have done well with the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. Check out this thread.

I wish you well bud :)

Hiya Jacob
and welcome

Just to add, my friend with UC has had remarkable results with Remicade (Infliximab in UK). She was going to the toilet nearly 20+ times a day in work, bleeding and in agony.
I just love to see her now, fit, happy, well and newly married!
Wherever you are in the UK, talk to your gastro, you might be an ideal candidate for it.
Good to have you here, good luck and
lotsa luv
Joan xxx
