Hello-
I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Proctitis in 2000. Was able to get condition under control in 2005-
2003 ran a marathon, 5K, three half marathons. 2004- ran a marathon- three half marathons- 2 10Ks and several 5 ks.
I enjoy running.
From 2005 until a little over a month ago I have experienced limited symptoms-
occasional stomach pain- and bloody diarrhea but was quickly able to be brought under control with Rowasa Enemas or Canasa suppositories- In the mean time to keep the condition under control I was taking 6 400mg of Asocol a day. In 2010 I changed medical groups- with that needed to change GI Doctors- New GI Doctor would not prescribe Asocol- only Canasa Suppositories saying since I was in remission so long I had no need for oral meds.
The second week of January 2012 I experienced diarhea- which turned to bloody diarhea- I called doctor to ask for Asocol, Canasa anything to help alleviate symtoms- Primary care doctor asked me to go in office (I was taking antibiotics for acne) They guessed I might have C Difficile- Asking me to provide a stool sample after prescribing me Flagyl.
I took the flagyl for 2 days which caused me to not only have the diarhea but it turned to pain and vomiting - this caused me to cause to Urgent Care (Thursday)- where they told me to go off the Flagyl and just have anti diarhea and anti nausea meds-
On Saturday the same week the pain was worse- and more vomiting and diarhea- I went to the Emergency room where they did a CAT Scan of my stomach detecting my intestines were entirely inflamed- Prescribing Predisone Flagyl and Augmentum- I took these for two days and was called my my GI Doctor after I emailed him to come in on Tuesday for a flexible sigmoidoscopy- He detected as far as the scope will go I was inflamed-
So prescribed me 4800 mg Asocol a day - told me to discontinue meds ER prescribed-
Thursday of the same week I still had extreme discomfort- GI doctor prescribed Prednisone to go with the Asocol- Friday GI doctor was on call and I was vomiting and felt extreme pain- he said hang on one day and if I still felt discomfort he would have me admitted to hospital-
I went to Hospital Saturday January 28- and was given IV steroids with Rowasa Enemas- and Asocol- placed on an all liquid diet.
No improvement after three days of IV steroids triggered GI doctors to suggest Remicaid- On February 1 I received my first Remicaid infusion which nearly immediately made me feel better.. less pain- more energetic- bleeding subsided-I was released from hospital on Thursday February 2.
I was told to get second Infusion two weeks later- which became difficult to get authorized-
GI doctor had me admitted this past Friday to receive my second infusion this time without a liquid diet-
I vomited multiple times during infusion including vomiting blood.
I asked GI doctor if diet could interfere with success of infusion he said no- but to me that was the only factor separate from the first successful infusion- that and now he prescribed Imuran- so I'm not sure if diet for Imuran has caused the nausea and pain--
Today it's been five days since Remicaid infusion and I am still in pain for at least three hours each morning--and still have blood in my diarhea-
GI Doctor is telling me to talk to surgeon in the even this becomes the only option--
I am curious--- Are there other treatments out there that can prevent surgery if my symptoms do not seem to see enough improvement? And
Is there any diet foods that could help speed up my recovery? Possibly go on a liquid diet until I see less blood- and slowly add food?

Doctor took me off Asocol for a bit.. but still on predisone..

Sorry for the long story- I'm trying to make sense of what is happening- since never in my life have I felt this unhealthy for this long with no answers..

Thank you,http://www.crohnsforum.com/images/smilies/sign0085.gif

Hello Tantan and welcome to the forum :bigwave: I'm sorry to hear you are having such a tough time of things. If the Remi is not working you can always ask about Humira, it is in the same family but is based on human protein rather than mouse - check out our trratment forum to get more info. Also ask about an EN/liquid diet as this can really give the bowel a chance to calm down and not be aggrivated as much so hopefully the pred can start to work on any inflammation that is still present - for more info this time check out the diet and supps sub forum. When are you next due to see your doc so can discuss things? I hope you can soon start to feel better and please keep us updated on how you are getting on

Wow.
New GI Doctor would not prescribe Asocol- only Canasa Suppositories saying since I was in remission so long I had no need for oral meds.
Is this your current GI? If so, is he able to look you in the eyes?

Welcome to the forum. I'm really glad you found your way here. I don't have any specific advice for you but pray they are able to get things under control soon. We're here for you anytime! Please keep us updated.
