Hi Everyone,
My name is Brian, and I live in Raleigh, NC. I am currently waiting for a diagnosis, after a recent colonoscopy.
My problems began 8 years ago. I started having problems with acid reflux and nausea after meals. This progressed to severe diarrhea and weight loss, dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, abdominal pain, and problems tolerating food. I was eventually hospitalized and put on TPN, but I was not given a diagnosis. My doctors thought it was severe IBS, because everything came back negative with my EGD/Colonoscopy. That was 5 years ago.
My symptoms became more numerous as the years went on, and I developed anal skin tags, bloody stool, anemia, and vitamin D deficiency. I knew I didn't have IBS. So I bounced around from doctor to doctor with no answers. After suffering for so long, and a PICC line infection which caused sepsis and a fever of 104.3, I decided to go to the Mayo Clinic for answers. Unfortunately, I had an ignorant physician who wanted to diagnosis me with IBS before she ever ran a single test. She was very unprofessional, and I didn't trust her judgment. After spending a week there, and investing so much into it, I decided not to go back after a week.
When I got back, I read up on IBD and Crohn's, and realized how close my symptoms matched. I found an IBD specialist at the Cleveland Clinic, and made the trip to Ohio. That was last week. I had a colonoscopy which showed rectal inflammation. The doctor was planning to scope my Terminal Ileum, but he said that it wouldn't have been safe, because I was so uncomfortable during the procedure. I was disappointed, but at least he found something after all these years of suffering. Afterwards, he said that he believes I either have Crohn's or UC. I'm currently waiting on the biopsy results.
I plan to have a Capsule Endoscopy soon, so that we'll know what's going on in my small bowel. I hope to have all of the answers that I've been looking for very soon. That way, I'll be able to start treatment and live a better life.
Thanks for taking the time to read my story. Take care.
Brian
