newbie feeling very low

I was diagnosed with Crohns in 2005 following a long year of tests and a variety of symptoms. I have had IBS for many years, so thought it had just got worse. Over the last few years I have had good times and bad times. Last summer I had a flare, which I mainly put down to ridiculous amounts of stress at work. Prednisolone did not work its usual magic so I had a barium follow through which showed a small stricture. My gastro Dr suggested that a balloon could be inserted via a colonoscopy to stretch the stricture. ( I am trying to avoid surgery if possible.) This was tried unsuccessfully in December 2010. The 'doctor' who I saw informed me that as he could see no inflamation I was better! It took me 3 months to get to see my gasroenterologist, during this time I have continued vomitting, diarrhoea and considerable pain. I was put on an emergency list to try the procedure again. My new date is 27th April. I am so sick of being in pain, feeling pretty worthless and to top it all off my boss had told me that due to the amount of sick time over the last 6 months and inconsistency, my work is not up to the required standard. I have worked for the NHS for 20 years and although I do understand how difficult it is for the service and how it does not help my patients to see me grimacing, I could have done without the further knock to my confidence. I feel I'm at an all time low and any advice would be appreciated. I currently take azathioprine and sulfasalazine. I usually take celebrex for pain relief but have stopped as it currently seems to make no difference.

:welcome: to the forum! Sorry you are having a rough time. I know your pain. I too had narrowing but I opted for the resection. Had many years of relief. I have my own theories on the balloon thing but narrowing is dangerous and very painful. In my own opinion nothing can help the narrowing , but that is only my experience. I know you dont want surgery, but my thinking of having the balloon pushed through and was unsuccessful, not a chance I would go through that again. I hope you get some relief soon. Good you got off Nsaids, because that and Ibuprophen is a no no for the gut and Crohns. Let us know how you get along and what your plans are. Glad you made it here!:thumleft:

Hiya Sonia
and welcome fellow Brit

Please don't be intimidated by the fat cats, you are covered by the Disability Discrimination Act aka the Equality Act.
Download this from the Crohns & Colitis UK and shove it where the sun don't shine ie up their arses!
http://www.nacc.org.uk/downloads/factsheets/employers.pdf

and lay off the Celebrex, it's an NSAID.
hope you feel better soon, and be assertive! Fight em!
lotsa luv

Hi Sonia and welcome! I hope the balloon works this time around and you can start feeling better! But if not and you do need surgery, try to think positive. It certainly wouldn't be easy, but imagine the possibility of years of remission!! Good luck and please let us know how it goes!

I was diagnosed a month ago, its been a series of tests, blood work, you name it but somehow you get through it. I struggle with the fatigue and feel like I have no life. Todays is a bad day I usually only have 2 good days a week, but man I LOVE LOVE those good days. Hope you have many!

Hi Sonia and welcome!

Good luck with your appt. If you continue vomiting or develop a fever, please go to the ER. Vomiting is never a good sign! You could have a blockage.

Keep us posted on your progress. Hope you get some answers soon and something to make you feel better.

Hiya, Thankyou all for your support and advice. Astra I downloaded from NACC. Very useful, thanks. I didn't realise celebrex was an NSAID. My gasro nurse recommended it as she felt it wouldn't upset my guts. (I also suffer from migraines and have painful joints) Does anyone hve any suggestions for pain relief. Paracetamol does not touch it and anything with codiene is making me nauseous at the moment.

Hiya Sonia

has your gastro mentioned Infliximab (Remicade) to you or Humira?
have a mooch round the sub forums on here about this, lots of success stories.
Also mention your vomiting, this could be a clear indication that there's an obstruction.
All I can recommend is a med called Amitriptyline, this is an anti depressant at high doses of 250mg, but docs have found that at small doses of 25mg it helps with migraines, headaches, joint pain etc. I have been using it for months now, it is a fab drug, I'm a huge fan! It has drastically reduced my headaches and shoulder joint pains.
good luck

Hiya.
Just wanted to give an update. I had my procedure yesterday - hooray! Over the last few days I had been really poorly. I could not keep down the picolax so was very anxious that my bowel prep would be poor, but the surgeon was really great and reassured me loads. He dilated my stricture to 15mm and revealed some inflamation above the stricture which was not previously detected. It explains some of the vomitting. All in all, hoping this has been a success and that I can get back to something like a normal life. Thankyou all for your support fellow crohnies. x

Hi Sonia, i have strictures atm, small and large bowel, GI is trying to treat with azathioprine but i dont think its working, so its great to hear that ur procedure was successful, i will ask about the balloon procedure at my next appt next week. The doc who did my last colonoscopy said he could open my large bowel stricture with a balloon but nothing has been mentioned since.

Thanks for the good news, its given me a bit of a lift tbh which i need atm. Hope things go well for you over the next few weeks and that its an end to ur pain!

Ian
