Hi ! My names Lucy and i was diagnosed with crohns about 2 years ago , back in May 2006 , although my symptoms had really started the year before .
When i was first diagnosed i was very weak and skinny and couldnt go to school and i found it hard to come to terms with the fact the condition is chronic , and it didnt really sink in at first . I was diagnosed following a much put off colonoscopy and was immediatly put on asacol.I had a horrible reaction to the asacol and it gave me terrible pain in my muscles and joints . I came off the asacol and my doc's decieded to try me on modulan.
My introductions to modulan where not the best , as my dietiton , rather than introducing it slowly , made my totally cut out food straight away , and ofcourse i couldnt handle the drastic change . I also tried to have it with a n-g tube but hated it and pulled it out =/ I was referred to another hospital who also tried to put me on modulan but i still couldnt do it and they made me feel like a failure
I was then put on budesonide , which totally didnt work but the docs wouldnt listen to me and by my next colonoscopy and endoscopy the crohns had got worse and affected a larger area . I was then put on the dreaded prednisolone , which also didnt work and i was reffered back to my original hospital for a 5 day course of IV steriods . Around that time i also adopted a gluten free diet ,which was difficult at first And then , finally REMISSION !!!
I was in total remission for a year . :biggrin: So much so that i was totally back to normal , and bieng ill seemed like a distant memory
Then in december 08 my symptoms returned . I went onto 40mg pred in febuary , then onto IV steriods for 3 days , then 50mg then i got an awful flare up with fevers and my legs siezed up and i was taken to hospital where i got yet MORE iv steriods and antibiotics .I also manged to have a bit of a breakdown in hospital I was sick of taking steriods , with all there side effects and them not working so i insisted to my consultents that i be put on a tapering dose so i'm off them now
When i went to hospital on monday my consultant gave me azathiaprine , however i am very worried about the side effects so wouldn't take them and I said I would rather attempt a elemental diet again :| So i went to see my dietiton today and she has given me some Elemental 028 ( Summer fruits)and i have to try and replace a meal with a couple of cartons tommorow , a few more saturday ect until i am just having elemental . So fingers crossed this will work !
