Hi everyone, just got to say first of all that this forum really is an invaluable source of information for IBD sufferers and i am thankful for stumbling across it.

I have previously posted on the IBD forum but thought i'd add my story into the mix. I was diagnosed four days ago with severe crohns of the ileum with a substantial stricture after 3 years of increasing symptoms. This after having surgery for a perianal abcsess earlier this month. I also have a perianal fistula for my troubles which will also need to be operated on. Although it has now been pushed to the backburner until the crohns has been tackled.

I have been on Ciprofloxacin, Metronidazole and Prednisolone for three days now and must admit have noticed a distinct improvement in my symptoms. My symptoms were predominantly pain based. I used to get rise in pressure bottom left corner of the abdomen with an obvious inflation of the bowel in that area. The pain would rise and rise (10/10 on the pain scale) at its highest point my bowel would gurgle and make a quite horrible noise, louder and more violent than the usual bowel noises we all hear when people are hungry (obviously embarrassing if in a public place, which i rarely found myself as the pain normally means me going out an very rare ocassions) at this point the pain would steadily decrease and i could literally feel a woosh of relief from bottom left to the bottom right of the abdomen toward the ileum.

Luckily this happened whilst i was being consulted by the specialist and he seemed pretty alarmed and made an initial diagnosis there and then. After various tests he has been proved correct, sever crohns of the ileum with stricture. I have not read about any other sufferers on the forum having these pressure based bowel noises.

The meds i am on seem to have considerable effect. I don't think i have gone 3-4 days with such reduced symptoms for about 2 years now. From reading your stories i put it down predominantly to the PRED. As some of you may have read on my previous post in the IBD general discussion forum i have been given the option of surgery or medium term meds with check ups to see if stricture reduces. I'm pretty skeptical that the stricture will reduce enough for me to avoid surgery in the near future but I'm keeping an open mind and will not make the important decision until all the facts are in. I am seeing specialist this week for further discussions as alot of you have provided me with important questions to ask.

Thanks everyone.

An interesting thing my specialist told me and I'm sure i have read it before is that Crohns seem to affect people between the ages of 20-30 and of Mediterranean origin more so than most. Seeing as I'm 26 yrs old and of Italian origin its seems to be that i am unfortunately just right for the disease.

WOW your new to this disease
Ive been on Prednisolone for a long time. Since ive had CROHNS
My doctor said I will never get off of Prednisolone Since Ive been on it to long
But it however does control my Crohns really good.
Ive not been in the hosiptal for a couple of years now. Ive have Crohn's for almost 15 years now. In due time you will learn how to live with it.
I know the pain so well when its acting up. Now thats not something your ever get use to
When mine acts up I just up my dose of Prednisolone, it seens to work for now.
Your very young about same age I was first having problems .
God bless you and TAKE ONE DAY AT A TIME
It will work out but IT DOES TAKE TIME

Hi littlebaby, thanks for the kind words. 15 Years!! Glad to hear you get some relief from the medication. Have you ever been down the surgery route or is it a personal choice to stay away?

I had a fistula the fisrt year and had surgery
Have not had another one since
Boy they sure are PAINFUL
My doctor wants me to go on REMIGAGE(Dont think I spelled it right) but I chose not to
I guess one day when the Prednisolone and my other meds stop working Ill try new choice of meds. But my doctor said I WILL ALWAYS HAVE TO STAY ON THE Prednisolone NO MATTER WHAT NOW . Because my body would go into shock if I stop taking them.....
If you can get off the Prednisolone do so .......I which I listen to him when he wanted me to stop taking them .But its to late for me
Currently Iam on
COLAZAL....750 mg take 9 pills a day
Prednisolone .10 mg 1 a day(but been taking two a day these last couple of days because my rib poped out) Now I have a new problem to deal with
DICYCLOMINE ...10 mg one pill a day and
NEXIUM.....40 mg one pill a day (have acid reflux disease also
If I needed have surgery I WOULD
Because Iam older now and it does not matter if I LOOK GOOD IN A BIKIN lol

Hey Freddo-

I hear you on the loud, sorry you can't hear the tv, gurgles - and my tummy looks like at times there is a snake in there moving around - has for about 5 years but I never thought anything of it until I read your post. I seriously need to write all this down and ask the doc if it's related. I find I have to actually lay on the rt side though cause if I lay on my back or left side somethin is being stretched and it just kills. It's been that way for three months solid, on and off for 2 years but again, who knew?

I've been on the pred for over four weeks now (was on for 11 days, then off, then back on now for 2.5 weeks) and the severe paid has mostly subsided - it took me about 10 days though. I still have my moments but overall, it's a good thing as I can stand upright most of the day. I haven't had any of the other side effects other than I literally get dizzy and have to sleep about 45-60 mins after taking the dosage. It's been that way since day one.

Glad you are feeling a bit better though and mucking through all the info. Take it easy!

I understand

I totally understand how you are feeling. I have had 3 surgeries in the last 17 months for an abscess and fistula. My last being January 18th. They tried doing the collagen plug insertion. They put 2 plugs at the base of the fistula one on each branch. The goal of the surgery is for the plugs to block out the opening and scar tissue to form a block. I went to the doc a week after surgery and she did a scope thru my rectum. At the time she said everything looked great. At the same time told me I couldn't have sex for a month. Literally the next day one of the plugs came out. Is anyone familiar with this? I am wondering if it is because she did the scope. How can I not have sex, yet they can put a scope directly in the effected area? If anyone is familiar please let me know!!
I also sleep better on my right side. It feels like a huge gravity pull if I try my left side ever.
Hope you are feeling ok

Hi Keara. My Specialist told me that the noises along with my other symptoms were a tell tale sign of a stricture somewhere in the 'tummy' area as whatever is in there tries to force its way through what has become a small narrowing in the bowel. What pretty much confirmed my stricture before i ever even had any tests was the fact that i would get extreme pain which was relieved by these demon noises. A tell tale sign that my bowel was trying its hardest to force 'matter' through a tiny hole formed by the stricture. If i were you i would at least let you Doc know at your next visit as it may point out something not previously considered.

Glad the Pred has relieved the severe pain. After 5 days it has relieved alot of the severe pain for me too. I know it's not a great meds long term (side effect etc), but anything to give us some relief short term is welcomed with open arms as far as i'm concerned. Good luck and take care.

Hi Capecod, sorry to hear about the plugs. My abcsess surgery was fine. Waiting for it to heal now. Gonna have to wait for the fistula surgery as my specialist wants to tackle the crohns first. Good luck.
