Hi everyone, just got to say first of all that this forum really is an invaluable source of information for IBD sufferers and i am thankful for stumbling across it.
I have previously posted on the IBD forum but thought i'd add my story into the mix. I was diagnosed four days ago with severe crohns of the ileum with a substantial stricture after 3 years of increasing symptoms. This after having surgery for a perianal abcsess earlier this month. I also have a perianal fistula for my troubles which will also need to be operated on. Although it has now been pushed to the backburner until the crohns has been tackled.
I have been on Ciprofloxacin, Metronidazole and Prednisolone for three days now and must admit have noticed a distinct improvement in my symptoms. My symptoms were predominantly pain based. I used to get rise in pressure bottom left corner of the abdomen with an obvious inflation of the bowel in that area. The pain would rise and rise (10/10 on the pain scale) at its highest point my bowel would gurgle and make a quite horrible noise, louder and more violent than the usual bowel noises we all hear when people are hungry (obviously embarrassing if in a public place, which i rarely found myself as the pain normally means me going out an very rare ocassions) at this point the pain would steadily decrease and i could literally feel a woosh of relief from bottom left to the bottom right of the abdomen toward the ileum.
Luckily this happened whilst i was being consulted by the specialist and he seemed pretty alarmed and made an initial diagnosis there and then. After various tests he has been proved correct, sever crohns of the ileum with stricture. I have not read about any other sufferers on the forum having these pressure based bowel noises.
The meds i am on seem to have considerable effect. I don't think i have gone 3-4 days with such reduced symptoms for about 2 years now. From reading your stories i put it down predominantly to the PRED. As some of you may have read on my previous post in the IBD general discussion forum i have been given the option of surgery or medium term meds with check ups to see if stricture reduces. I'm pretty skeptical that the stricture will reduce enough for me to avoid surgery in the near future but I'm keeping an open mind and will not make the important decision until all the facts are in. I am seeing specialist this week for further discussions as alot of you have provided me with important questions to ask.
Thanks everyone.
An interesting thing my specialist told me and I'm sure i have read it before is that Crohns seem to affect people between the ages of 20-30 and of Mediterranean origin more so than most. Seeing as I'm 26 yrs old and of Italian origin its seems to be that i am unfortunately just right for the disease.
