Hi all

My fiance was diagnosed with crohn's 17 years ago.
No problems for last 5 years but with 2 months to go til our wedding he has been consistently ill for last 6 weeks.
Can't get cover for travel insurance for love nor money (well money - £354)
He is hoping to be put on some tablets very soon but is waiting for results of tests.
Have to be honest - pretty apalled at the way he has been treated (including being told to go home from hospital with some paracetemol).
He was given Modulem for a while but nothing seems to help.
Its all alien to me (and him) and appointments for dietician etc are months away

Welcome to the forum Sarah and Ian!

Sorry to hear about the recent health troubles. Is it possible that a lot of stress related to wedding planning has triggered the recent symptoms?

In the meantime it is likely best to try and avoid foods that are known to cause problems. This is more of a personal evaluation to determine what is tolerated vs. not, but there are some great threads about this in ourDiet, Fitness and Supplements forum.

Good luck with the symptoms and I hope that this does not impact your actual wedding day.

Wedding stress! omg.. I hope he is well enough when the time comes. Wonderful that he has someone so understanding and caring by how you sound.

Welcome to the forum <3

Hi Sarah and welcome! I am sorry to hear your soon-to-be hubby is not doing well. Had he been taking daily maintenance medicine to keep him well? Most of us with Crohn's will take medicine for the rest of our lives (even when well) to prevent flare ups.

I hope he can get some help soon and start to feel better before your big day!

Hi welcome

I feel bad that he is not doing well. I know this can be a stressful time and then to throw illness on top of it I cannot even imagine. I hope that everything works out and that he starts to get some relief from the symptoms soon.

Thank you

Thank you all so much for your replies.
The honest answer to your question is no he has not been taking medication up until he became ill about 6 weeks ago, simply because he has been well. We realise now that he should have been doing so and now I know what needs doing he has no hope of getting away with not taking them : )
Diet is definetly a major factor. The poor man was trying to lose some weight for the wedding so was eating healthily which actually seems to have made the problem worse. Fibre - grrrrrrr!
Ironically, he has lost the weight he wanted to for the wedding in the last six weeks and more besides. Now he looks like a head on a lollipop stick (said with love of course).
I will have a read through the info on the diet section as non of it seems to be common sense - I would have thought that 'healthy' food would have been good for him and clearly its not the case. I am on a diet and we are completely at odds with what we are eating.
Can I ask - he has been in agony for weeks now and the doctor is saying there is nothing they can give him for the pain - is this right? Even dogs aren't left to suffer.......

Hi Sarah and Ian
It is really important to have a consultant who is particularly interested in Crohn's disease. If you are not happy with your current consultant go to your GP and ask to change to one who has an interest in Crohn's - it can make a massive difference to the approach they take to management (you may have to be a bit assertive in this respect!). For an acute flare up it is worth considering a course of prednisolone - this usually works quickly and will reduce pain associated with the inflammation significanlty.

Best wishes

I agree completely! My GI prescribes me Tylenol 3 for more achy pains. Then he also gives me Loratab 10 for the doubling over pain. I'd have him ask again. If his GI doesn't think it's right, then I might look into a different GI. He might not understand the disease completely.
