newly diagnosed and having problems with medication - please advise!

hey, i was diagnosed with crohn's in april but think i have lived with it for a number of years - coping ok!
I have been prescribed Pentasa (8 a day), Budesonide, (was 3, now 2 a day) and Ferrous Sulphate, (2 a day). It started off ok, but I am now experiencing horrendous side effects and i'm unsure whether this is normal/what to do.
On a day to day basis I am exhausted and it's getting worse, I am also suffering headaches, nausea, back and neck ache, pain when I urinate ans walk long distances, (a bladder infection has been ruled out), and worst of all my stomach is significantly worse! I'm in pain every day and it is extremley tender to touch!

has anyone else suffered anything similar and what did you do? please advise, i feel horrendous!

hey ramsey
well all those problems you just mentioned *could* be symptoms of crohns as well. except for the pain when urinating, im not sure about that one.
but the headaches i get often, a few people on here have back pains assocaited with their abdomianl pain...it seems it kind of radiates through.
have you seen your doc and told him all these symptoms?
like pen said, the meds youre on may not be enough. there are stonger meds out there that might make you feel a lot better!
get it all checked out, its not worth it to wait and be in so much pain...theres so many solutions availible, you just gotta find what works for you

I agree with Pen you might not be responding to the meds. I was taking Asacol (similar to Pentasa) and it was not working for me. Actually made the pain worse. Eventually they changed me to Sulfasalazine. This has been way better for me. I would be very honest with your doc. and tell them all the symptoms you are having and that they are getting worse. You want to get the inflammation under control so that your body can heal or rest for a while. Kello and Pen are right. You have to find what works for you. For me Entocort and Sulfasalazine are what worked. For you it might be a totally different combo. Push till you get results. I had to eventually go into urgent care to get the docs to try different meds.

Good luck. Let us know if anything changes.

If you were only diagnosed in April, chances are the drugs haven't taken effect yet.

I'm not sure if you say you're on Pred (Budesonide ?), but if it is, 3 a day is only 15mg, which is a very low dose.

Talk to your doctor about your symptoms, they are all symptoms I get in a flare (except the bladder problems), perhaps you need to go on a higher dose of Pred.

Like eveyone has already said it does sound like they might not have eveything under control :( I just wanted to mention real quick that I had a fistula that went into the vaginal wall and that made urination painful for me. I don't know where your crohns is but that might be something to ask or think about?? Sorry a little graghic sounding but I don't know how to say that in a nongraghic way..I hope you feel better soon maybe you should even talk to your dr.so they can help get everything settled down for you..

hello and welcome....

As for the battle of find a medication plan that works for you, it can take some time. And as others have said, the Docs start out on lower dosages and work up to levels that you need. Voice your concerns and explain them to your medicine Team.

isn't budesonide really entocort which is a steroid it just mainly focuses on the intestines and is supposed to have less side effects than prednisone, I too took it and was doing okay if you call 5-6 losse stools a day which too me is way better than 15+ however finding a good medication is hard and at the right dose, so everyone here is right on that. Feeling tired is my biggest complaint, and having the stomach pains, to me I have gotten used to the D yeah it sucks, but i can still function because my job and places i go i make sure there is access to a bathroom however if i am too tired to get out of bed none of this matters, just keep trying to see what works for you and don't give up. Give it some time to work
