Greetings to all. I am so glad to have found this group. My 14 year old son was diagnosed with Crohns in March 2012. He had been going through a growth spurt along with loosing weight. He started spending a lot of time in the bathroom and his appetite was diminishing for a growing boy. He would experience periodic cramping and after a few months we realized something was wrong. After the blood tests, stool tests and upper and lower GI scoping, we found that he had Crohns in the ileum. He was put on Prednesone and yesterday was his last dose as he was tapered down to 5mg every other day. He started Asacol last week. He's been doing great. At the time of his diagnosis he was 5'6" and weighed 118lbs. Now he's 5'7 and weighs 144lbs. Today, he is supposed to start with Imuran. I am having a very, very, difficult time with this. After reading the literature and scouring every online forum, it makes me so nervous to have him on this drug. I want to believe that he has a mild case of Crohns and was really hoping to try and see if he could manage this disease in a more holistic way, i.e. diet, probiotics, fish oil, etc. I just wonder if we are going to be on this medication treadmill and never get to find out if another way would work as well or better.
I humbly appreciate any feedback. I know every child is different and this awful disease presents itself differently which makes it even harder to address.
