Greetings to all. I am so glad to have found this group. My 14 year old son was diagnosed with Crohns in March 2012. He had been going through a growth spurt along with loosing weight. He started spending a lot of time in the bathroom and his appetite was diminishing for a growing boy. He would experience periodic cramping and after a few months we realized something was wrong. After the blood tests, stool tests and upper and lower GI scoping, we found that he had Crohns in the ileum. He was put on Prednesone and yesterday was his last dose as he was tapered down to 5mg every other day. He started Asacol last week. He's been doing great. At the time of his diagnosis he was 5'6" and weighed 118lbs. Now he's 5'7 and weighs 144lbs. Today, he is supposed to start with Imuran. I am having a very, very, difficult time with this. After reading the literature and scouring every online forum, it makes me so nervous to have him on this drug. I want to believe that he has a mild case of Crohns and was really hoping to try and see if he could manage this disease in a more holistic way, i.e. diet, probiotics, fish oil, etc. I just wonder if we are going to be on this medication treadmill and never get to find out if another way would work as well or better.
I humbly appreciate any feedback. I know every child is different and this awful disease presents itself differently which makes it even harder to address.

Hello and welcome to the forum, I am glad you have decided to join. I am not a parent myself so can only try to imagine how hard it is to know what to decide when it comes to meds, diets etc, if you have not already then please do have a look at our parents forum as there is such a great bunch of people here (especially our Dustykat who is wonderful) to chat with: http://www.crohnsforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=49.

I'm pleased your son is now doing much better and hope this can continue for a long time to come.

NB Also do have a a look at our diet and sups forum as this can tell you more about what others have tried which may help.

Greetings and welcome :) I'm glad you found us but am so sorry to hear about your son :( That must be so heartbreaking. *hugs*

I agree with Angrybird, set up camp in our Parents of Kids with IBD forum! The parents there are amazing.

In addition, we have a forum dedicated to Imuran that you may want to check out. Yes, Imuran is a powerful drug, but properly utilized and monitored, it can be great. And utilizing Imuran does NOT mean you still can't utilize the holistic methods as well. I'm a huge fan of the shotgun approach to treatment and absolutely think you should incorporate holistic methods that are shown to be efficacious.

We're here to help you in any way we can.

All my best to you, your son, and entire family.

Thanks AG and David...I really appreciate your words of wisdom and will definitely be part of the Parents forum. Just had a very comforting talk with my sister who is a pharmacist on the topic of Imuran. At this point, it looks like this is the way to go for my son. We will be keeping a close eye on his progress.
Thanks again!
