Are these a side effect of crohns itself? I always assumed they were a side effect of steroids because I had them bad when I was on pred years ago. However, I get at least one every night now (I'm in a severe flare) and am not on any steroids yet. I hate waking up every morning soaking wet. Is there anything I can do to get rid of them??

night sweats have plagued my life.
its normally a sign of infection of some sort with me. mainly due to my fistulas.
have you any fistuals/abcesses?

I've noticed that since my illeostomy, I not had many nightsweats, in fact, ony when I've had a flu. Perhaps you've an infection somewhere?

oh wow, I feel your pain!

read this, I found it ages ago, click on the left - medical conditions that cause night sweats.
Then on the right there is a list of medical conditions, Crohn's is one of them.

Stephanie, from what I've read here in other threads, night sweats are a part of the illness itself and are not steroid-related. Many of us experience them - I've had many nights where I awoke absolutely drenched in sweat! The first time it happened, I was afraid I had peed the bed, I was so soaked. Unfortunately I don't think there is a way to stop the night sweats, other than waiting for the flare/infection to run its course. Someone in another thread awhile back suggested sleeping on a towel, so that you don't have to change the sheets in the middle of the night. Other than that, just give it time.

i can absolutely verify that Crohn's night sweats are real... for years before i was even diagnosed, i'd wake up with a me-shaped cold wet patch on my sheet... really horrible.. i used to be so tired, but have to get up and change sheets, or go downstairs & sleep on the sofa..

Thats a very good link Joan, I see colitis is mentioned too.
I used to suffer from night sweats some years ago, not pleasant at all.
I hope you get some relief soon Stepanie.

Thanks for the posts. I guess it's pretty common with Crohn's, then. As far as fistulae/abscess, I don't know of any if I have them. The GI didn't see any in my scope a couple weeks ago. I have been having some vaginal pain and wonder if something is going on in there, though.

I may try sleeping on a towel tonight. I don't have enough pajamas to keep this up without doing laundry every day. It happens, without fail, every single night. I don't bother changing the sheets in the middle of the night. I just go to the couch. My kids inevitably end up in my bed and there's NO way I'm waking them up to change sheets! LOL

A couple months back I went through several nights where I had night sweats so badly that the sheets were totally drenched, like I poured cold saltwater all over the sheets. I havent had them recently (and since my colonoscopy/diagnosis) but I was taking 3 AM showers and then going back to bed on top of a couple dry towels laid on the bed.

Oh, and my wife was drenched in cold salt water too. But im morbid, so it was kind of funny watching her roll close to the edge of the bed, the only dry spot on it.

Both steroids and crohns can cause night sweats. I had them pre steroids and still having them now on steroids- like I've ben dunked in a pool.
One tip from another thread was to keep some spare pj's next to the bed which I now do. I got up one morning with everything on back to front which my children found highly amusing.

My body temperature in general kinda goes whacky during a flare. Especially if I'm anemic. My hands and feet can be freezing while I'm drenched in sweat under blankets in front of a fan. I sweat a lot to begin with, though.

Night sweats drive me crazy!!! I'm like an oven at night and wake up soaked. My mom found a line of nightgowns at Soma Intimates called Cool Nights that absorb sweat. These help a bit if youre a girl and want something pretty.

i seemed to have the night sweats when I had some sort of abcess or fistula going on. I would also shiver like crazy but have a temperature over 100. definitely annoying.

Hi,
I am new to the forum. I was diagnosed about 3 years ago, also had surgery so have been in surgical remission since then. My doctor put me on 6-MP. Did not really have night sweats when first diagnosed, but have been having them off and on for the past 6 months or so. Alos just had a check up and am anemic. Have to go back next month to find out about B12 levels etc. I am not having any flares, so at a loss as to why I am getting night sweats.
