I'm new to the forum and not sure if this subject has already been covered, but I was wondering if anyone else has "accidents" at night when they are asleep. It's horrible to wake up in the middle of the night with poo all over yourself. Not to mention the TOTAL EMBARRASSMENT of the situation because my husband is in the bed with me. Of course he doesn't make me feel bad and is very supportive. He cleans up the bed and linens while I take a shower (in the middle of the night :depressed: ) Sometimes he sleeps through the incident and I have to admit I'm kind of grateful on those occassions. Anywho, I just wanted to see if anyone else was going through this same problem and how they coped with it, whether they had a significant other in the bed or not. But I'm really interested in how other couples handle the situation too. I'm still new to the whole Crohn's thing and finding this forum is the best thing that has happened since I was diagnosed last year. I've already found so much helpful information. I look forward to hearing your comments. :ysmile:

I have this problem occasionally, and during the day time as well. When it happens when I'm asleep, I usually don't even wake up, I find out about it in the morning.

How long has it been going on for? Have you identified the cause of your incontinence? Sometimes it can be caused by some problem in the rectal area, where the sphincter muscles are. Or do you think it's just that you're body's not giving you warning signs in time? It might be worth discussing with your doctor, as it's usually a treatable problem.

I manage by using incontinence pads. Simple but it does keep everything clean - and they're especially important during the day when I'm out!

I'm glad your husband is supportive. :)

UnXmas, I've only had this problem at night and when it does happen I wake up. Sometimes I wake up in enough time to catch it and I can just go use the bathroom. It's never happened in the day time and it only happens occasionally, usually if my Crohn's had been acting up that day. But sometimes I can have a perfectly fine day and still soil myself at night so I'm not really sure what triggers it. I'm not familiar with the term incontinence...please explain further. I really didn't want to get to the point of having to put pads down or wear a "diaper" at night. Crohn's is already "unsexy" enough without having to go to bed with pads and a diaper :( Hopefully, I can fix the issue with medication. I have a dr's appt Wednesday and I will discuss it further with my dr then. Thanks for the comment...glad to know I'm not alone in this matter.

Incontinence just means accidents - your bladder or bowel emptying when you don't get to the toilet.

I understand how bad it feels to have to use pads. I have got used to it now. From what you've said, it sounds like your husband would understand and it wouldn't influence his attraction to you. But do talk with your doctor, it may well be that there is a way to fix this for you. Medications like loperamide and lomotil can slow the bowel down so accidents are much less likely.

This really is a problem that doctors can usually solve. Sometimes it will take a while to try different treatments until you find what works for you. Let me know how your appointment goes.

Ok thanks. I will bring it up to him Wednesday and see how things go. I mentioned it to him when I first went to him...that was before he diagnosed me. I guess he assumed it went away with medication. But I still periodically have it. Anyway, I will let you know what he says. Thanks again.
