hi
hubby is having a section of his biwel out monday and they said no bowel clean out prior.
this to me seems a risk of infection. has anyone else had surgery like this with no bowel cleanse? thx

I have had both with and without. It depends on lots of factors including surgeon preference, what part of the bowel is being removed, ability to tolerate prep, general health etc. I think it's become an increasing trend not to prep as this can cause issues too. It's a balance like any part of surgery. I appreciate it seems intuitive to prep but I would trust the surgeon on this unless you have any other reason to doubt. Hope all goes well.

Hi muppetgirl
I appreciate your reply. This is reassuring. I wasn't sure if this was typical or not. We will trust in the surgeon. Thx again!:)

I had a small bowel resection last September and was surprised to learn that I didn't need to prep either, especially as I was suffering from blockages so there was sure to be something there.
Just no food from midnight, op was around 9am the next day. All went well, no infections etc.

I've had loads of surgeries without bowel prep. It's never been a problem. I've had ten abdominal surgeries. My usual surgeon doesn't seem to use them, and my surgery with a different surgeon was an emergency, so there was no time to prep anyway. I usually have to fast from midnight until the surgery the morning of the day after. It's definitely nicer without than it would be with a prep!
Hope your husband's surgery goes well.

I had a left hemicolectomy and did not have any prep. There were no issues. I just had to fast from the night before and was recommended to "eat light" the 2 days before.

Ty for all the replies this has really helped reassure my hubby and I. His operation is tomorrow at 7:30 am prayers would be appreciated. Thx again :)
