no control

It seems that i have no control over bowel movements weather or not they are form or not. I have crohns in the sigmoid, ascending and transverse colon. Also i have uncontrolable spasm and cramping when ever i do any thing physical. Just wondering if anybody else has simaler symptoms and what they do to cope.

Yes, I have spasms and cramps too.....Ive suffered for years with on and off D and C, now Im in a state of complete constipation...despite having a trip to the ER for 8 days with nothing....they gave me colonoscopy prep....I was in the bathroom sick for hours...I finally went for three hours, became very shocky....and now Im constipated again!! Havnt gone since Monday....and not passing any gas...so yes, I feel your pain. I use pain meds, and meds for nausea and cramping....doesnt relieve it all the way...but Ive accepted I will be like this forever. Good Luck~

Hi RONF! I also have Crohn's in the same areas-do you mean you have bowel incontinence (meaning you can't control your bowels at all) or bowel leakage? You might not have the sisease under control; you don't mention what meds you're on.

This happens to me when I'm flaring-loss of all bowel control. Also I've had meds like Imodium and Bentyl cause bowel incontinence as well, as a side effect. I get cramps and bowel leakage when I do physical activities occasionally from fistulas.

I have had the doctor change meds/or up the dose of my maintainence meds, and I also do anal Kegel exercises, where you tighten and release the anal muscles. My GI told me about this; when you have diarrhea 10+ times a day eventually these muscles weaken, but can be strengthened. I know it's a little TMI, but they really do work!

This definitely should be something to discuss with your doctor. There are solutions to these problems, so don't give up!

i feel yer pain mate.ive had loss of bowel control a few times but luckily ive been home so no major embaresments to date but after a while the meds do help you with the bowel control.ive seen me loosing control going from living room to toilet and mines downstairs, its only a few footsteps but ive still gave way lol.im on asacol, prednisolone steriods and 6mp.it will get better and you'll be in better control of the situation,

Hi moutaingem thanks for the response. I have some control over my bowels most of the time, but some of time none. The problem i have with imodium is " that my lack of control" happens with lose and formed stool so imodium binds me up. I have tried buscapan, dicetel and trimebutine for the spasm and cramps. I have used pred, salofalk imuran and various enemas with little relief. Currently no meds and no doc for now.

Yes, Imodium causes the same problem for me. It might be time to reconsider the meds, and also keep a food diary. I can take every medication known to modern medicine but if I eat certain things I get diarrhea similar to what you're describing. I take Levsin but also received little relief, currently I take Pentasa and Remicade. I also take Nortryptaline, which is an antidepressant but also causes desensitivity in the bowel, and that has helped me alot.

Hi RONF - Some people on this forum use tri-cyclic antidepressants to help with spasming. They are relatively safe and well tolerated and very good antispasmodics. I was on Imipramine for a short time and it was wonderful. It doesn't do anything to take care of the Crohns, so you would still need your other meds, but it helps control the urgency issues.

Another antispasmodic used for IBD/IBS is Bentyl.

Good luck - I hope you find something that works! -Amy
