Hi I'm another Denise

I'm 51 now but have had bowel problems since my late teens as I had pains where I could never properly empty my bowels when I went to the loo - I used to joke that I went 'in installments' When I finally saw a specialist at 19 he told me to eat more fibre and made me feel really embarrased so I never saw anyone about it again.

Skip forward 30 years and I'm at the GP with terrible pains which he tought might be appendicitis ( but he told me I was probably too old to have it ) Surgeons found a large mass on the Ilium an promptly removed the right half of my colon. Again I was told I would get better and left to fend for myself. I got worse, had loads of pain, upset tum, sickness and total fatigue. Finally one doctor realised I shouldn't be like that and ordered a scan which showed scarring from recurrent crohns and active crohns. It took another 6 months to get any treatment but everything I tried made me more sick so I went for a few months without any until this January when I was prescribed Salofalk granules which helped but I still couldn't shake the fatigue. Finally a different doctor told me I had low B12 and I got a course of injections and have just had my 1st top up. I can't believe the difference it has made!

I had started exploring a 'raw food diet' years ago and apart from a few months after the surgery when I couldn't tolerate any fruit or veg I now eat mostly raw fruit and veg/salad all day and a cooked meal in the evening (inc meat & dairy) and try to avoid too much fried or fatty food and overall I'm managing well. I rarely have problems in the day but often will after my evening meal but can't bring myself to give up all my favourite meals!

Welcome Denise (the more the merrier :))!

I am glad you are finding a diet that works for you. I don't know if your evening meal is causing some trouble just due to it being more complex than your other meals (especially if you having meat and dairy at the same time). It sounds like you are trying your best to keep your diet balanced though so good luck with it.

I believe that B12 is absorbed in the terminal ileum, so if this was partially/fully removed during surgery you would be unable to absorb this through food. A monthly injection might be needed to keep your B12 levels at the right level.

Glad to have you on the forum and hope to see you around soon!

My mum has ulcerative colitis and she has the exact same thing! I have Crohn's but don't have this myself but she's says it's one of the worser symptoms for her :( I hope you're feeling okay xxxxxx

Hiya Denise

Them B12 injections sound like the business! I'm ok, I've still got my ileum so doc won't give them to me, so zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz all day long!

Hi Astra and thanks for the welcome.

As far as I'm concerned B12 is miracle juice  It's made such a difference to my life - I feel as though I spent 18 months just lying on the sofa waiting for life to pass me by, now I'm back at work (the only downside :() and when I feel I can 'risk' it I go for a run in the woods with my dogs - I can only manage 2-3 miles which is a bit tough as I used to run 1/2 and full marathons but it's still better than sitting on my ass all day!

You should really push your GP to see if your B12 is low - loads of healthy meat and dairy eating people with thier digestive systems intact have B12 deficiency so I don't see why s/he is that reluctant to test for it and give it to you if it's low.

Thanks Denise

I have my gastro appt in August, I'll mention it to him again, but I know he'll say no!
Besides, my GP said it isn't low, dunno how he knows this! Maybe he's Gandalf the Grey, he certainly looks like him!
stay well
xxx
