Anyone in the UK ever been referred to a nutritionist because of Crohn's? I believe I was, about 15 years ago but I was quite young so I forget and also went to Harley Street to see someone so I also confuse what was NHS and what was private. So, anyone? Because I think it would benefit me now and might bring it up with my GP on Monday. What I really wanted to know is if this is actually DONE (NHS referral to nutritionists) and if it helped anyone if so?

Not nutritionists, but I'm always getting referred to dieticians on the NHS (and always cancelling them because I don't think they'll help me). I've just been in hospital and an NHS dietician arranged my TPN and prescribed me supplements to have when I left hospital, and made me yet another referral to an outpatient dietician.

I have been refered to a dietician with the nhs also but I found it not to be that useful for me they just suggested FODMAP which when I looked through was pretty much what I was doing anyway. I never went back not because I didn't want to but I had so many appointments I got overwhelmed maybe one day I could see them and maybe they could suggest something else.

I am not one for alternative treatments only because the ones I have tried have never helped where modern drugs have helped me have an almost normal life. I wouldn't ever rule out trying anything and I don't think people should be so narrow minded to say that because people trust medications they are in on a conspiracy.

Thanks for the reply, Kayleigh.
Seems to be that its not that worthwhile...I might still mention it to the GP anyways and get his opinion on it. Usually, I have just been drinking meal replacement shakes that are designed for guys building muscle so they can get the calories without wasting energy breaking down food. This is pretty good as I often don't feel like eating much so need that just to make the minimum nutrition but it's good to top up as well.
As for the alternative treatments- if something works, I'll try it but, like you, I've yet to find something of that ilk that does. This is why this side of 'medication' is not prescribed, I guess. If it did, I'm sure doctors would have cottoned on by now.

Davidevans2112 I don't live in the UK and can't seem to find a thread specific to your question. I live in the USA and did see a nutritionist for Crohn's when I was first diagnosed. Since I was 9 years old at the time my mom found it more helpful than I did because she was the one buying and preparing my meals. The nutritionist helped my mom understand the diet my GI wanted me on (the low residue diet) and helped to suggest alternatives when certain foods didn't agree with me. The nutritionist was helpful at the time yet we only needed to see them a few times.

Thankyou Jennifer. I'm glad to har that a nutritionist has helped some.
And also thanks for the redirection of the above nonsense.

The problem I find is I am under a surgical consultant and a medical one, they seem to either want to operate or try drugs all the time, I have seen a dietician a couple of times and have always been recommended the low residue diet with little avail. Hopefully the SCD will work for me
