odd reaction to morphine based pills

not sure if anyone else has had this problem but it seems like i have developed an odd reaction to any morphine based medications. to start let me state that about 10 or so yrs ago i was a heroin addict for 5 yrs. (been clean for the last 10 yrs) 2 yrs ago i was diagnosed with crohns. for the first yr my doc had me on vicodin and later percocet. i seem to do fine on these meds. now that my pain isnt too bad i was put on tylenol 3 and then tramadol. with both of these meds i experienced extreme bloating, pain in my left side, and gas so bad that its embarrasing to go out to public places. i just got out of a 3 day stay from the hospitol and the only pain meds they gave me was morphine thru my iv. and i experienced the same issues. so im wondering if anyone else experiences this or did i just develop a reaction due to my previous addiction?

Meds like codeine and morphine can cause constipation, maybe they slowed down your system, giving you the bloating and pains. And gas would be where the waste fermented rather than moving swiftly through. Even if you didn't notice any constipation, it is possible to get a plug of hard poo, and liquid stool moves around the plug.

Hi Carey - I agree with Rebecca's input, that you could be feeling the effects of the narcotics slowing down your digestive system.

I would mention to your doc and see if s/he recommends something to help with the gas.
