Do any of you good folk find meds like Rennie, Gaviscon etc or any other off the shelf treatments work ok? I do suffer with heartburn especially on a Monday after the weekend:ycool: but with being recently diagnosed with CD I'm obviously watching what I consume as its early days

I'll give that a go then thanks, do you find the liquid form better or the chalky tablets?

I swear by Gaviscon Double Action, the one in the pink bottle or packet.
I use the liquid at home but always take the chewable tablets when I'm going away, they both work equally as well.

I use Morrisons own brand, I find these tablets have been helping. I have to be careful what I take because of other medication I'm on.

Ranitidine works very well and is available over the counter. Its the next step up from antacids like gaviscon and rennies etc.

Yes the pink Gaviscon got me through some difficult times. Especially with the nighttime acid reflux.

Fortunately I don't have to do that anymore.

That's what I take it for DEmberton, two or three dessert spoons just before bed, works wonders :)
Ranitidine is really good, buy own brand, it works out a lot cheaper.
If indigestion or heartburn are really bad on occasions, take ranitidine then an hour or two later take gaviscon. Don't take them together or too soon as they cancel each other out.

Is Ranitidine available off the shelf in a supermarket or is a from a chemist as its a step up from the widely available antacids etc?

I think it is from a chemist/pharmacy like Boots, super drug. Many supermarkets have pharmacies now. It is more effective though.

If you find ranitidine works, it is worth getting more from your GP as the usual dose is 150mg twice a day on prescription and it may work out cheaper. Is it reflux (acid into throat/reflux) or indigestion type pain?

it's mainly acid/reflux with occasional heartburn, I'll give it a go & if i can get it on prescription that would be great as they're free here in Wales:thumleft:

I used to buy it from Boots, their own brand. You get a pack of twelve 75mg tablets and it says 'take one tablet, don't take more than two in 24 hours. And for no longer than 6 days continuously'.
I suffered crippling indigestion when taking steroids, my doctor prescribed 300mg tablets, one to be taken at night. Sorted it out immediately and I took it for months, until I tailed off the steroids.
Even better in Wales with free prescriptions :)

Hope you get sorted.
By the way, I've been to Conwy many, many times, used to have an aunt lived in Llandudno, what a small world :)

Yes very small world, Llandudno is a lovely place too although its a bit bleak at this time of year but i find it too busy during the summer season so i'm never happy lol

I find that omeprazole (brand name: Prilosec) works better than ranitidine. I'm not sure about the UK, but here in the US the 20 mg dose of omeprazole is available "off the shelf."

With omeprazole I take one 20 mg capsule each morning when I first wake up and I'm then good all day. With ranitidine I used to have to take more as the day wore on to keep the acid at bay.

I found for heartburn that Gaviscon was the best - but not the tablets! The oral suspension is much better, and gives me that relief faster and for longer! Available in all supermarkets and chemists over the UK. Give it a go!
